I like this secret a lot. I don't really have anything to add, it's just nice to read these kind of blunt but true secrets from time to time. A good reality check amidst the sea of negativity online.

This has the same vibe as those "People who complain about bad CGI are just bad at watching movies" secrets. If you liked the fifth sequel to the ninth reboot of Deathquip Explosion World 3 starring Interchangeable Jack Blond-Dude, that's fine. You don't need to justify it to anyone by implying that everyone who didn't like it is doing it wrong.

I have the most respect for critics who are able to evaluate a movie based on what it's trying to be rather than compare everything to their personal platonic ideal of a movie. So, it's not inherently a problem that a movie is a big dumb action flick. The point is to ask "Well, is it an entertaining big dumb action flick?" Sometimes the answer is genuinely "no" but a good critic can explain why they felt that way rather than just dunking on the movie.

I agree and disagree. Evaluated purely on its own merits, a wholly uninspired and mediocre property is just...that. Its whatever. It exists. It will be entertaining for many and boring for many others and possibly a bit of both by turns for some. Mediocrity doesn't make a property offensive.

OTOH, the way the film industry functions right now has created a system in which "more content" is far, far more important that "good content," and buzzy content is a prepaid ticket to success that doesn't just allow TPTB to phone it in, it invites them to phone it in. Which is an issue that does kind of offend my personal sensibilities. Not ethically, but just as someone who loves fiction and loves film--or at least loves what they can be. So when I roll my eyes in annoyance because I find something to be extremely uninspired, it's not usually that one specific property that has provoked the bulk of my derision; it's the fact that it's the umpteenth property this year that has left almost the exact same taste in my mouth.

That said, I do TRY not to be too relentlessly negative. I will express my negative opinions right along with my positive ones, but I don't express them repeatedly in the same spaces, and if I'm talking to someone I know likes the thing I dislike, I will try to keep my criticism brief and not too harsh.

I mean, I agree but at the same time I also think it's important to push back on mediocrity. If we all keep asking for more Big Macs we will keep getting Big Macs because so many people say Big Macs are the best food ever.

And like, I can eat a Big Mac, I crave it at times, but I would rather get more variety and quality than the same old shit.

It's like I'm drowning in a sea of Big Macs and everyone is busy complaining that the Big Mac bun doesn't have enough sesame seeds as if that is real problem.
