Most shoehorned-in female LI characters in bromance C-dramas are not hated because of misogyny though. They're hated because they are an unnecessary addition that's usually terribly written and only dumped in there to appease censorship and the audience KNOWS this.

Okay but why is the default hatred (and misogyny)? You know why that character was added... just ignore her if your focus is the thinly veiled BL?

Given that, yes, sometime female LI characters can be badly written, so not all of the dislike is inappropriate story-wise...

I'd say there's an aspect of basic ship wars about it. The Girl is getting in the way of the ship that a particular viewer wants to see, she takes up screentime that could be devoted to the Favoured Ship, her presence implies one half of the Favoured Ship might be Unfaithful to his True Love. Also, some viewers have issues with Media Femininity (and I can't say that I don't tbh) and take it out on The Girl.

And it's a bit sad, because the presence of a third party, either as a friend or as a destabilising influence on the romance, can make for some really interesting story-telling. Dismissing a character out of hand when a fic-writer could be exploring their I Wants and personal story arc and their effect on other characters is, it's just a little boring. I mean, write the fic that makes you happy, yeah? But I tend to find it boring to read.

Because we see the same horrible non-character over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over......

(Anonymous) 2023-01-09 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
Because you pigeon-hole anyone with tits as 'bland' or 'bitch'?

(Anonymous) 2023-01-09 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
... You don't know me. Maybe stop being an asshole?

I crave relatable female characters and we're finally starting to get them. Doesn't mean I don't have a kneejerk reaction after decades of the One Girl character appearing in everything.

Because the audience is fucking tired of the blatant homophobia displayed and the way stories they like get changed to appease censors and the characters are usually terribly written as well. I'd wager most of the hate isn't even about the characters themselves but about the simple issue that they were supposedly necessary to avoid the drama getting nuked.

real question: are male characters getting similar amounts of disapproval in GL?

(Anonymous) 2023-01-09 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
Not that I've seen, no.

hmm, well if that's the case, then I'm comfortable with my generality, even if the audiences/fandom don't overlap.

So you compare two completely different things (considering shoehorning a male LI into a GL show doesn't happen nearly as often, the female characters in Chinese drama are usually written in a much more annoying way and there isn't as much GL as the is bromance/BL shows AND the fandom don't necessarily overlap much) and decide "yup, same thing, my assessment fits"?
...okay.

Do I think fem-slashers are infinitely more chill about members of the opposite sex to their big ship?

Yes. Yes I do.

You clown.

Do GL enjoyers have to deal with the same amount of homophobia and gay panic by censors and audience? No, no they don't.
You clown.

yeah, absent more information, the generality stays general.
