I mean, maybe you're struggling with the perceived irony because you've got it wrong from start to finish? Griffith didn't betray his friends for "the greater good". Eren didn't betray his friends at all from his POV, he pulled a "this is for your own good" deal.

Once you actually describe the characters as they are written, it actually makes a lot of sense why fandom received them like that.
