They both committed genocide for "the greater good" and turned into monsters, both physically and metaphorically.
ANR ending supporters are salivating at the mouth to see Eren turn on Mikasa and Armin. Sound familiar?

The irony here is that the majority of readers were disgusted by Griffith's actions, but Eren has a lot of support. Even the hypothetical ANR version of him that will hurt his friends to reach his goals.

Griffith didn't commit genocide. He just killed a lot of people, that's very different. (Eren in this is worse)
What truly horrifies people in Griffith's case is that he sacrificed his own friends because of his ubris and because he was a coward (the ritual happened at his lowest point).

Eren's motivation are completely different. His are very political and the main difference is that Even is not alone in his ideal and policy while Griffith was in his ultimate choice.

The similarities between the two scenarios are not very strong imho but I'm probably dense.

I do think Eren overall did way worse than Griffith, especially considering all the political and genocidal implication.
Shingeki no Kyojin's fandom is... Umh... Particular, let's say. I'm not going to go near that fascist infested nest.

I don't know about Attack on Titan, but Griffith didn't sacrifice his friends and comrades for the greater good. He did it for his own gain. You could argue that he was already a monster before his turn, a small monster fish in a large pond who turned into the largest fish in that pond.

I mean, maybe you're struggling with the perceived irony because you've got it wrong from start to finish? Griffith didn't betray his friends for "the greater good". Eren didn't betray his friends at all from his POV, he pulled a "this is for your own good" deal.

Once you actually describe the characters as they are written, it actually makes a lot of sense why fandom received them like that.
