Re: OP
(Anonymous) 2023-01-14 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)Ohh, got it. Sorry, I misunderstood the point you were making.
I do also agree with your point that I prefer the straightforward Doylist explanations of "Hm yeah, the reason I put this in the story is because I think it's sexy" as opposed to the convoluted Watsonian explanations of "Well if you TRULY understand the worldbuilding I'm doing and the symbolism I am trying to get across..." And like yeah, having that realization of "Oh. Wait. The author just has a rape kink," can actually help you get past some of the jarring "Hm the writing is seriously undermining its own message here??" hangups when reading a work.
I guess I have more to say about how I do think old man authors are engaging with the worldbuilding and morality of grimdark worlds in interesting ways (even if their iddy kink scenes undermine that), and also that I think the medium you publish in and whether it allows for open acknowledgement of kink probably makes more a difference than other societal context (like gender or age), and also that I think that people in general (not saying you) aren't really used to openly acknowledging kink and id when evaluating the quality or value of a work (it's kind of a new phenomenon maybe? or at least the terms are new, maybe?), but yeah, I'm having difficulty saying any of that succinctly so I'll just leave it at that.
Sorry for misunderstanding, and thanks for clarifying!
