tattoos are hot

I met a guy today who had the word "TATTOO" tattooed on him.

I'm put off by fics making characters smokers, so I think I understand where you're coming from, OP.

Cigarette or weed smokers?

I can’t stand the profusion of weed smoking in fic, like everybody in college is stoned constantly.

Don’t mind it as some plot point. And the same with tattoos. If the tattoo is relevant to the story, okay, but if you just think it would be hot for Captain America to have tattoos, laaaaaaame.

OP - Oh, yeah, I get that. If the character doesn't smoke in canon, then there are fairly limited circumstances where making them a smoker in a fic works for me. Generally it can work for me with grim, angsty stuff, where life has gotten really rough for them and they're suffering. In that case, making them a smoker sort of highlights the whole "they don't care if they die" element.

I'm also fine with most characters having a cigarette at an event while drinking. Usually it's scenes where the character is having angst over something and they escape to the balcony/veranda/back porch/garden and have one of their very occasional cigarettes to calm their nerves and justify their absence. Or else a non-smoking character finds their doesn't-usually-smoke love interest smoking on the balcony, and the LI offers them a drag, so of course the non-smoker character accepts, because you don't just reject the chance to stand in weirdly intimate companionship with your LI and put your mouth on the same poison stick they just put their mouth on and be alone together at a busy event.

But for me there's a difference between having a character smoke as a rare one-off, to convey something, and just full-on making them a smoker. The latter only works for me if the message being conveyed is that they have become indifferent to death, or perhaps even passively suicidal.

It happens. I'm a big fan of tattoos, and depending on the design and placement they can be super hot. HOWEVER, I too am not a fan of suddenly giving characters (unless they're an OC) tattoos to make them look cool or hotter. Idk why it bothers me, I guess it's because I'm rolling with what canon has given me, and I already like character as they are. I think the only exceptions for me a characters for whom the tattoo fits...or can be imagined to have one due to their lifestyle or personality...like I could see Getou Suguru from JJK with a tattoo, like some sort of curse related tattoo on his arm/shoulder. Yet Toji? Nah. Characters that already have tattoos (like the crazy Majima from Yakuza) fine. Characters you're adding more tattoos to? Like say Dean Winchester? Corny.

But I usually either pretend the author didn't write that or back click if it's too much

this is it. whether it's tattoos, a habit, a new hobby, new hairstyle, jewelry, fashion choice...if it's something the character doesn't already have it's something I don't really want added unless it kinda-sorta makes sense and isn't wildly ooc. that goes double, triple, quadruple even for things that are definitely the author's own personal aesthetic and they're mapping it onto their fave. we've all done it at some point, ourselves, so seeing it in the wild just reminds us of our own self-inserting.

still, at best it'll get an eyeroll and ugh from me, at worst a back-button. no harm no foul but ugh what a pet peeve it is.

especially when it's a setting where the character could easily have gotten a tattoo already if they'd wanted one. like, in one of my canons, you'd have a hard time convincing me that the 30-something bounty hunter wouldn't already have a tattoo if he'd really wanted one because there are multiple other characters in the canon with tattoos so they're clearly easy to get.

I have nothing against tattoos and don't mind characters having them if it fits, but I'll always remember an Aragorn/Legolas smut fic which I actually liked overall but I was honestly taken out of the story by Legolas having a giant back tattoo. The author wrote in the notes that they simply loved tattoos, which was the reason why he had it.

I remember this one Legolas/Gimli fic with excessively flowery Tolkien-esque language where Gimli had pierced nipples and I'll never forget it because he goes "You've never seen a pierced pap before?" and it took me out

Yeah, I am neutral on them in fic. Sometimes they make sense for the character (like commemorating a big life experience that happened in canon, or a protective magical tattoo) but far too often it's just the author thinks it's hot so in the fic it's considered hot with no particular effort to show the reader why it's hot.

I had finished reading a fic yesterday and the tattoos were described almost unintentionally comical because they were word tattoos that had some edgy shit like 'broken inside' across the chest and various lines all over this characters body - which I assume the emo 13 year old who wrote it thought it was very deep, but all I can imagine is a characters covered comic sans or roman time numerals over-sized fonts.

I don't personally want any tattoos but if it makes sense for the characters I don't mind it. I especially like characters getting matching tattoos to commemorate something.

I’ve run into a lot of OFMD tattoo fic. Part of me is like, Stede wouldn’t get one his whole brand is being a gentleman! The other part of me is like, Stede would totally get one he wants to be cool and pirate-y.

Oh, I can see both sides of this one! Personally, I don't think Stede would think to get a tattoo on his own but I do think he could be easily talked into getting one and at that point would have to be talked out of getting the biggest, gaudiest tattoo he could think of.

I have a tattooing kink so I love it. Wish more fics delved into the art and craft of tattoos.

Non-canon tattoos in fics for anime & manga caons make me back click immediately. Do you, author, think this tattoo would be So Cool? Sure, whatever. Would a Japanese person living in Japan think it's So Cool and also get it done immediately? Maybe for the first, absolutely not for the second. Same with weed, which is actually illegal.
