This is my stance too. I'm a fan translator and I have a Ko-Fi if people want to give me something as a thanks, but my translations are and will always be free for everyone to enjoy.

The moment you start putting fandom stuff behind a paywall, fandom ceases to be for everyone. It turns into "you can only participate in fandom if you have the money to spend on it," which defeats the entire purpose of fandom in the first place.

I do think though that if a fan of some obscure C-novel for example, that you had no interest in or plans on translating, commissioned you to translate it and provide the translation to them, that is a fair case in which they should expect to pay you for your time. If they or you then want to release the translation for free to everyone, even better!

I see giving to a person's Ko-Fi as no different from donating to keep AO3 up and running, just on a micro level.

Your last sentence. Yes. This is the big reason I'm wary of money and fanfic crossing paths so much, too. We already see how messy things get when people are upset that someone got more kudos or comments or bookmarks than them. Throw money into that mix and it'll just add to that stress.

It also takes away from people's insistence that they're "just doing this for fun!" when someone comes in to critique their work or something. Well, no, not if you're getting paid for it, you're not. At least, that's not the only reason you're writing anymore, it's not just> a fun hobby anymore.

And I say all of this as someone who also struggles financially and can sympathize with people's desire to want to get a little extra money for necessities and whatnot I totally understand that desire to get paid to help with all of that, I just don't know that this is the best route to make that happen.
