Copyright may be stupid but it is the law, you lemur. And charging for fic isn't like pirating movies: your violation is traceable because the AO3 servers have static IP addresses and an actual non-profit (OTW) backing them! That's where the buck stops. So who gets hammered by lawsuits if you make a $2 kofi off your MCU fic? Not you. Nope, the OTW does!

Fair use is the only thing protecting what we do as fic writers. I am absolutely amazed such a simple concept eludes so many.

And possibly you as well! Or at least an expensive and harrowing lawsuit where you end up taking all your fic offline forever and not writing more! And if you're in China, actual jail time for writing m/m!

Even in the US they can still get you for obscenity as a criminal charge in many states, if someone in the right position of power decides they dislike your fic or your art enough.
