Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 05:02 am (UTC)(link)Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 05:14 am (UTC)(link)I watched a video from a YouTuber i like very very much, one that talks about the game industry as a whole and has been doing it for years. They're particularly famous about denouncing bad industry practises and human rights' violations or scandals in some companies.
This time they talked about something that emotionally drained me. It has to do with JKR and transphobia and allies. It's a very good video (you can agree or not with them, but the script is very good) that I will link here if anyone wants to see it: https://youtube.com/watch?v=uNKyQVsgKLg
I just don't get why more people just wait and pirate a videogame if they really want to play it but it has the name of a reprehensible person attached to it. Why.
Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 05:44 am (UTC)(link)Oh, I see. Thanks for explaining. I might go look at that.
Hope you feel better, anon.
Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 06:31 am (UTC)(link)Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 07:19 am (UTC)(link)I'm curious what seems harder, and if it's anything that a good tutorial might address. Not because I have it in for this particular game. I just ... the more I observe filthy rich corporations charging as much as they think they can, the less patience I have for the notion that the poor "deserve" to be shut out.
Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 07:29 am (UTC)(link)Also... sorry, do you think developing videogames is free? It's not, it's ridiculously expensive and the prices usually just reflect that. The only people you "stick it" to are the already not amazingly paid developers, the rich people in companies like that probably couldn't care less. And playing videogames is not a human right.
Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 08:36 am (UTC)(link)My impression is that the developers are getting their payment for work provided, but the chances of them living the good life because each copy of the game sells for around 70$ are nil. Very few authors and content creators profit substantially from royalties, which is why many are (quietly or not) in favor of piracy.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 12:16 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 03:41 pm (UTC)(link)>> I'm pretty sure great-scale piracy for video games isn't the "stick it to the rich" activism airt is imagining.
I've never said that pirating the game would be "activism". How is NOT GIVING MONEY at launch activism?!
Do you think corporations and creators are ENTITLED to your money and depriving them of 60/70 euros for a copy of a game is activism? WHY?!
I suggested piracy because that's the first thing that came to my mind, thinking that people would've wanted to play this game almost immediately and there are crakers working on it (also, for me the biggest issue for me is Denuvo on PC FUCK 'EM.), but you know that people can just wait a little bit and get a second hand copy or rent it, so not to give full price at launch? Is THAT activism? How is that different from piracy when the result is almost the same by the creators' POV?
If you think not giving money to a corporation is activism there's something fucking wrong here. This is what baffles me and I don't understand about these times.
It takes ZERO and I mean ZERO EFFORT not to buy a game at launch. That's the bare minimum of an action you have to take. You just have to do nothing AND SAVE YOUR MONEY! That is what I don't understand. It's not activism because you're not taking any actions, YOU'RE NOT GOING TO MAKE THE WORLD BETTER BY NOT BUYING A GAME!
But in this specific case by not "acting" you're also not directly endorsing JKR's distorted views. And I say this because she has a big problems and has demonstrated that she view any endorsment of Harry Potter's universe like an endorsment to her anti trans views and politics.
This is a very particular case here. It's important because it's JKR we are talking about.
Also, I'm not going to play nor pirate this game. I don't care at all about Harry Potter. So please save all your effort in trying to make me feel guilty about "not paying the developers". They're not getting my money anyway.
Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 03:53 pm (UTC)(link)Pirating it because it is the right and moral thing to do because the copyright owner is in your eyes morally reprehensible: Activism/slacktivism of the same type as calling for boycotts.
Of course corporations and creators are not entitled to your money if you don't want the goods they are selling. But if you want them then yes, they kinda are. Buying it second hand or renting it means someone already gave them money for it so it doesn't really change that - someone paid them for their goods. Just because it's not you doesn't mean the money has not been paid.
And I know you missed this, but I was talking about airt, not OP - I'm aware that these are two different people and the one I meant wrote "the more I observe filthy rich corporations charging as much as they think they can, the less patience I have for the notion that the poor "deserve" to be shut out" which does imply that not paying for a game is some sort of anti-corporation pro-poor people activism in some way or another.
I only told you that it's not as easy as you think to pirate a game.
Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 04:09 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, I get it now. Sorry. I honestly though you were talking about me, the OP.
>>Not buying it and pirating it instead: Not activism.
Pirating it because it is the right and moral thing to do because the copyright owner is in your eyes morally reprehensible: Activism/slacktivism of the same type as calling for boycotts.
I don't agree. I mean, I agree that people try to make it pass like activism and that's bullshit, but it's really not. Also boycotts in the sense of NOT BUYING A PRODUCT are not activism for me. That is what confuses me lol
So probably we actually agree with each other on this IDK
I don't agree on your stand about renting a copy is different to pirating because the copy has already been sold to someone. Maybe you're not aware that there are some software houses that want to limit how and how much people can rent or borrow games from friends. For a corporation's POV they are almost exactly the same. The result is the same for them.
The only difference is the legality of acquiring the copy.
>>I only told you that it's not as easy as you think to pirate a game.
I agree, especially for the case of AAA games like this. But it's not impossible if you have patience and invest a little bit of time in hunting for trustworthy sources.
Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, no issue, it does get confusing, especially when reading on flat.
We can absolutely agree to disagree on this. I wouldn't call it activism per se myself, slacktivism at best, just like the calls for boycotting brands like Chick-fil-A when you didn't actually go there in the first place. Saying "I pirate this because of moral reasons" is more along the lines of virtue signalling to me.
>>But it's not impossible if you have patience and invest a little bit of time in hunting for trustworthy sources.
True, unless it's consoles like Playstation or XBox - I think it's still pretty much not a thing for those. Nintendo is a different matter, there it depends on the console.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 12:14 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 03:56 pm (UTC)(link)Pirating games is not the easiest thing because you have to hunt for cracks and if you're not careful you can get malwares and other viruses, but it's pretty rare nowadays. It's best not to hunt for games that have just been released and wait a couple of months minimum.
There are a lot of safe ways to pirate games, starting with downloading by safe sources and they are out there (I suggest the megathread on r/Piracy), using a trustworthy paid VPN when torrenting if you're in any country that monitors you, installing games on a Virtual Machine or having two different partition on your HDs and generally just knowing what you're doing.
It takes some efforts in the beginning to learn, but then you're set to go.
Remember ALWAYS TO USE AN ADBLOCK (uBlock Origin) when searching through pirating sites.
I don't pirate any AAA game because that is not what I play (and my PC sucks), but I pirate a lot of old portable consoles' games (mainly GBA, DS, 3DS, PSP and PSVita content). You can also emulate them on PC very easily now, but I have modded all my consoles. I'm pretty poor so I had to wait 5+ years to get them and I'm slowly getting through the PSVita catalog now.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 11:18 am (UTC)(link)Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)THIS. I mean I guess I made a mistake naming piracy because people here are mostly and sometimes very vocaly against it for whatever reason, but I mean. You can just wait and get a second hand copy or wait for a big discount if piracy is not feasible or safe for you.
Paying full price for a game that will give royalties to someone who is trying to directly hurt a minority group is not a good look for anyone.
I can and do excuse people who know nothing about the situation, because let's be real JKR's anti trans antics are not known to everyone, especially people that are not into politics and fandom or are not from USA/UK/AUS etc, but if you know who she is and what she is doing and you pay full price for that game?
There's something wrong here.
I'm usually one for death of the author and blablablah, but this is a slightly different situation. And yeah, not all trans people care and some of them bought the game at launch (because everyone is different and have different values and sensibility, like it should be), but it's not a good look for them either imho.
Also please if you read this and are interested in the topic, just watch the video I linked above. Stephanie Sterling made really good arguments and they are waaaay better than me at articulating them.
Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 03:26 pm (UTC)(link)Not until it goes on sale on steam and all the bugs are worked out in a year or two but still.
Re: Fandom Talk/Vent?
(Anonymous) 2023-02-14 04:23 pm (UTC)(link)>> pirating the game means you want to play the game, and you shouldn't want to play the game because it's a Bad Wrong game
>> if all sins are equally bad I'm not going to feel any worse about buying it than I am about wanting to play it.
No, paying for the copy at full price and wanting to play it are not "the same sin" LOL
You can't control what you want to do, but you can control how you invest your money.
I hope you're trolling here because really the logic doesn't stand. And I think you know it.
You can be against piracy itself and think it morally corrupt, and that's OK. I'm not going to try to force you or anyone else to pirate the game. IDGAF. But it's not the "same sin" as paying the game full price in this specific case. Come on.
Also, almost nobody is saying that the game itself is a BAD WRONG GAME, from what I've seen it's a mediocre AAA game that still pleases a lot of HP fans. And that's actually a good thing. I'm glad people are having fun with it, but let's not kid each other here.
People that are paying full price at launch either don't know anything about JKR or they know and just don't give a fuck about trans people/issues if it means they get to play with a Harry Potter game.
This is not actually about you personally.
I don't care what you do, now or later, you can buy the game guilt free! It's your money. Spend it however you like. You don't need my justification either for pirating the game or to spend money on it, but I hope people understand why LGBTQ people and especially trans people are having issues with this.
