HAHAHA.

I know this secret will piss people off.

Please, if you want to get out of fandom or hate your old fics, just orphan the things. I promised myself I would do this and definitely will, if I ever need to divorce myself from my output.

See I don't get "just orphan it instead" because my name being attached to it isn't the problem, the fact that something I no longer want people to read is still available for people to read is. Orphaning would solve absolutely nothing.

There's some fic I wrote when I was 12-14 on a website I can't get it deleted from because the admin has been unreachable for over a decade. No one knows that it's mine, it's under a completely different name and for a different fandom than I write now. It still bothers me a LOT that it's there and I can't get rid of it.

Why does it bother you?

Do you think the writing is clumsy? Or does it have opinions you no longer share?

(If it's the first, don't worry about. Nobody expects a 12-year-old to be a master of prose, I promise no-one is judging you.)

The latter. I was a pretty morbid kid who wrote a lot of "dark" topics very naively (and didn't know about content warnings). While I don't fault my young self for it I now find some of it potentially hurtful to read (especially having actually lived through some of that later in life) and I hate that it's there where anyone could stumble into it.

Oh hey, kids tend to do that too - any reasonable reader is going to understand you were young when you wrote it

I know it's easy to feel edgy about things but, uh, if it helps any, this is me saying it's okay to let the worry about this go.

nayrt, but it doesn't matter why it bothers ayrt. They don't like that their old stuff is still out there. It shouldn't be up to anyone else to decide whether or not that reason is good enough.

Sure, that's what I'd do, and I wish authors would do that. But it is absolutely their choice. Their writing, their choice. What OP is doing is just wrong.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 05:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's not the only reason why someone might want to delete their fic
