This makes me want to never post anything I write ever again.

Damn. This is a good secret.

I honestly can't bring myself to be mad at you about it. But it is wrong.

HAHAHA.

I know this secret will piss people off.

Please, if you want to get out of fandom or hate your old fics, just orphan the things. I promised myself I would do this and definitely will, if I ever need to divorce myself from my output.

Huh, I'm gonna depart from the previous comments. I think you're a hero. I've had people delete gifts they made for me and things I've loved that I bookmarked but which I hadn't saved so... I wish someone had preserved it. And I also wish more authors used orphaning rather than deleting their fic entirely, especially if people read and liked it.

Thank you for your service.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-17 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm mixed on this. I get wanting to save fic for personal consumption, just in case it disappears one day. But sometimes the reason a fic disappears is because the author intended it to. It's not cool to repost stuff without the author's permission, even if you do "orphan" it.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-17 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Officially, this is wrong and you should stop.

Unofficially, thank you for your service.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
err... seriously OP. Not cool.

I know this is a rare situation, but authors might be taking their works down b/c they've filed off numbers and are republishing them as original fiction... with an actual publisher, so they've been TOLD to take it down. Now you're just making them a lot more work.

You've already digitally preserved something, you saved the file. Good for you. Now, let authors choose whether or not to delete or orphan their works.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
What you do is wrong on so many levels.
How would YOU feel if you delete something and suddenly find it back.

Every writer has the right to delete their writings for whatever reason they.
Maybe they don't like it anymore or they don't want to be associated with the fandom anymore etc ...

I am also tired of people whining about deleted works.
I have made the experience that of them do not write / publish. They try to make the authors feels bad for deleting something they had written in their free time.

I did the (in the eyes of others "asshole-move") many times and I had my reasons. Orphaning or posting anon was never an option for me, and I didn't felt comfortable with some stories being online anymore. It is not that they are bad (if someone might assume that). I usually have personal reasons for deleting works and yes I did the asshole-move of deleting gifts as well.

What's the point of having your username connected to someone you're not close to anymore (I never wrote for exchanges and only gifted writings to friends).

Yes, I have lost some fics as well because I didn't saved them but I never attempted to find it back.
Sure it's a bummer to find a good story deleted but as a writer myself I thought that the owner would have their reason(s) and in the end it is their story, they can do with it whatever they want.

This is kind of sad.

I get it. There's been fics I wish had never been deleted, but you're doing this against the people who took the time and emotional labour to create something - and then act like a greedy corporation who's only interested in gathering content for consumers as a big 'fuck you' to the person who created it.

You'll keep doing it I have no doubt, but it's pretty selfish of you anon.

i'm so glad i didn't outright delete my stuff off of ao3, i just added everything to a private collection, because if anyone tries this with stuff i specifically removed from circulation i have irrefutable proof of plagiarism and can report it to get it taken down.

what an entitled little wretch of a secret. i am appalled.

Not cool. The author should have the right to determine what happens to their own work, whether it is published and where, at least until it becomes public domain (we can argue about copyright law another day).

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 04:08 am (UTC)(link)
... I'm not a writer and I don't know what to feel.
This is so wrong and repulsive, but a part of me is still grateful that you're doing this.
I feel dirty.

I wished I'd never seen this secret because from now on every time I see an orphaned work I'm going to wonder...

This is one of the *worst* secrets I've read here and I've been here for 10+ years. Kudos for that, I guess.

I've done this for two long since deleted authors (they each deleted their lj/fandom presence like 15 years ago) and their obscure deleted works. I went on wayback machine to copy their original fic posts and pasted it on the archive. I backdated and never mentioned them by name on the archive, but I do rec the links sometimes on tumblr...

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 04:42 am (UTC)(link)
Okay wow, what the fuck.

I have some fantastic fics downloaded that the author later deleted. I'm so thankful I still have a copy that I can enjoy privately and won't ever circulate it, because she had personal reasons for deleting them from public view and potentially flying in the face of that is incredibly disrespectful.

I'm all for the archiving and preservation of old/lost media, the internet can be great for that sometimes, but if it's something the creator has chosen to remove for their own reasons (whatever they may be) then that should be respected.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
OP ilu lolol. If a fic has been posted on the internet it's already out there. There's no uncorking that genie. People have been sharing deleted fic on ficfinder comms for ages.

Now, THIS is a secret. Whew

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
As a writer, anon, I think you're doing great. I could hug you for this, I could kiss you for this. Know I'm loving you from my corner of the internet because you do this.

If someone cares about what I made enough to interfere if it gets taken down, and put it back up as an orphaned work, that might well be the biggest, active compliment they could possibly give my stories. I put them online because I wanted other people to be able to see them. And, as fanfic, they never felt like they were more than part-mine to begin with.

Also, I think fans with judgey things to say about not "letting" an author delete everything are speaking over many other people who didn't take down their stories by choice, or didn't take down their stories themselves.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 07:24 am (UTC)(link)
OP, you are the MVP. Thank you for your service. Much appreciated.

Dick move? Maybe. But like we've been told from the very beginning, everything put on the internet is there forever. It's part of the risk we all accept when posting something online. I might delete it. And someone may have a copy and send it to all of their friends, who send it to their friends, and down the line someone reuploads. Or it was captured on the Wayback Machine. Love it, hate it, that's the internet.

I'm thankful you're out there, doing the lord's work.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 08:06 am (UTC)(link)
Intellectually I know what OP is doing is wrong.

Emotionally I feel like what OP is doing is, at least, neutral, morally.

Psychologically I'm interested in the fact that most of the people opposed to this secret have alluded to personal reasons why they might delete fic, but none of them, not even the anons, have actually put forward a solid reason why it's not okay for that fic to still exist with an orphan author, other than filing off the serial numbers.

Filing off the serial numbers makes perfect sense. But I can't think of any other reason, other than someone's fandom identity getting doxxed, why someone would really need their fic deleted rather than orphaned.

Also, re: the outrage about this secret, it's the internet and it's 2023. Most people should have a reasonable expectation that anything they put online might either be deleted randomly due to a server crash, or stay there forever after being archived or the site admins going AWOL.

So yeah, waiting for a reasonable reason here to hate the OP. Noting that 'fuck you' is not a reason.

Honestly I wish more people would do that. My favourite fic of all time got deleted and I was devastated. It took me 2-3 years but I finally tracked it down on Wayback Machine.

I think people really don’t understand that they have zero control over what happens to fanworks they upload. No one has control over anything they post anywhere.
