Nice to see none of you cares a little bit about antisemitism.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 07:28 am (UTC)(link)
you might have gotten more bites if you'd tried this line of trolling before it got so late and everyone went to bed. that's rough buddy

nobody cared when the books came out either

allegations of anti-semitism (and racism) against jk and the books are relatively recent, so it's clear they're not genuine concerns so much as people looking for another stick to beat her with

Dude, people made those accusations back in the livejournal/journalfen days of fandom, right along with the classism ones. The transphobia arguments are sort of new - that wasn't really on most people's radar twenty years ago. But they're a natural progression from how a lot of people were already uncomfortable with how Jo portrayed multiple "bad" female characters as large, traditionally masculine-featured, and performatively feminine. All of it was just easier to ignore back when twitter didn't exist.

...and that is literally the first time i've seen anybody alleging transphobia in the books themselves (as distinct from most of the accusations of transphobia stemming from things jk would later say in the media)

People have been bringing that one up since Rita Skeeter became a recurring character, but it's not specifically a transphobia accusation. It's a good old fashioned sexism accusation. The point is that that the jump from that to what we've got now isn't really that much of a stretch since it's all based on the correct way to be a woman according to Jo.

I don't think whether they're recent accusations matters as much as whether they've got any substance to them. I've yet to see anyone make an argument that convinces me children will pick up prejudices towards any race, religion, sexual orientation, etc. because they read her books, though.

About the only thing I might sit and discuss with kids, in relation to Harry Potter, for political reasons, is social class. Because the closest thing to actual poor people in JK's books isn't the Weasleys. It's the Gaunts.

You are seeing it in real time. Jewish people are telling you that the video game is full of harmful antisemitic stereotypes, and they're being shut down by a subset of children who grew up reading her books because they want to pretend to be a wizard more than they want to not re-enact pogroms based on blood libel.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 11:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, a nice feeling. Also it will get you accused of trolling.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 11:38 am (UTC)(link)
Nor do you, you people are usually happy to ignore antisemitism until it suits you.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 02:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"You people?" Nice.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-18 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Obviously meaning "people who only point out antisemitism when it suits you". In case that was too tricky for you to figure out.

(Anonymous) 2023-02-19 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
So what you said was... "people who only point out antisemitism when it suits you are usually happy to ignore antisemitism until it suits you".

... well, you got me there. It's a 100% factual statement.
