As long as we're on the subject of German bands singing about Russia, I've had Dschinghis Khan's Moskau stuck in my head on and off for weeks.

Aaaaand just like that now I know which earworm will be following me to bed when I turn out the lights in a few minutes. (Not even mad though, it's awesome. :D)

Pretty much the same. I seem to like music in a bunch of European languages because I also love Swedish, German, Finnish, Croatian and Serbian, Spanish, and Polish.

This video essay about the state of the Russian music scene (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSgEW9LFFw8) randomly popped up in my Youtube recommended. Now, admittedly I'm mostly into punk and Russian punk bands tend to either emigrate after, like, one EP or get locked up a lot, so not all the info was new to me, but it was really interesting to get a slightly broader view of things and hear some bands that passed me by due to my very limited interests.

Same, but I don't care to hide it. There would be very little media I'd be able to consume if I avoided everything from a country whose leaders have committed atrocious acts.

Me too! I love russian music and I'm currently actively studying russian by myself. I don't really tell that to many people nowadays.

My plan was going to Russia last year for like 6 months to study at a language school and try living there a little, but yeaaaaaaah.... Uhmmmmmm... Not going to happen any time soon, if ever.

I've never been pro russian government, especially because their stance on human rights is atrocious and I'm gay (I'm good at hiding it since I live in a homophobic country and I'm mostly still in the closet here) but still, visiting Russia is one of my dreams.
I don't have many and they're usually all linked to me studying languages.

I am so sorry. A lot of us were fighting so hard for our human rights and we were trying to integrate oue culture into global culture and now it's all gone in a minute. And probably culturally we are not going to recover in my lifetime. Even if I have a lifetime. We see clearly puta doesn't care for human life.

Anyway. If you still learn Russian you can try finding your local Russian community (there are millions who immigrated right now) it can help greatly with learning and be beneficial.

I just want to say that Vlad and Vladimir are two absolutely different names :'D It's like John/Jon thing.

Anyway. You can google bands, a lot of are against him and fleed Russia. Or you can just try any underground soviet music, they were anti-government. So you can always say that this one is singing about killing a dictator.
You can try Ukranian but I think Ukrainian language rhythmically sounds different but that's just me.

John/Jon are completely the same fucking name. It is just a spelling preference.

My family is Soviet Refugees and I have often identified myself as Russian-Jewish because up until very recently, no one could be arsed to tell the difference between Russia and any of the other former CCPs. I mean "Russian Jews" aren't even a thing, they didn't let is live there. But no one wants to hear "Lithuanian-Polish-Romanian-Belorussian-Ukrainian Mix", so Russian Jews it is.

All that to say that we abhor Russia, wish death to Putin and destruction of every last lingering bit of the Soviet Union, and we live our daily lives speaking Russian. It's our native language, partly because (like many other countries) The Soviet Union recognized Jews as a race for discriminatory purposes, but never gave us our own homeland like everyone else (except for one abortive effort that was clearly doomed to fail from the start), so no language to nationalize with. On top of that, we were moved around so much we couldn't attach to any language other than the lingua franca of the Empire: Russian.

So yeah, the language can be separated from the country for very many reasons.

Russian jews are sort of a thing though. My grand-grandfather was born near Tver' (always been Russian territory). How? Fuck if I know. Probably he was wealthy. And my Jewish part of the family lived in Central Russian through all the soviet rule. And most community I always had indefinited as Russian Jews. So it can be a thing. Does not excuse the whole Empire history and Soviet history of antisemitism of course

Look, if the US is rightly mocked for changing French Fries to "Freedom Fries" just because they had a tiff with France, I don't think it's any more sensible for people to deprive themselves of the artistic output of an entire culture because they despise one politician or government. It looks stupid, it is stupid, and it's a very shallow thing to judge another person over. When there are a million other reasons why you or they or anyone might be listening to Russian music.

Do you also hide American music?

One band I really liked named "Russkaja" even broke up over this. They were a ska punk band from Vienna, that took inspiration from traditional Russian music. The band no longer felt their satirical use of Soviet symbols and language was appropiate during the invasion of Ukraine...
