Solo trip

(Anonymous) 2023-02-22 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I want to take a solo trip someplace in the US for 3-4 days. Just to see if I would enjoy them. Looking for a city with good public transport and museums. What would you all suggest that *isn't* DC.

San Francisco. Have a gay old time.

Minneapolis/St. Paul because I live and work in a museum there. 😅 I usually drive so I can't fully vouch for the public transit system, but it's been nice the few times I've used it and I don't know anyone else who's had major problems with it.

enjoy your two feet of snow!

I would hesitate reccing the Twin Cities for public transportation if ony because every time I've visited, the places I go to and stuff I do is nowhere near one of the downtowns so cars are a must. How else can I get a Red Wagon pizza and then go fabric shopping at SR Harris?

This Twin Cities resident had to look up SR Harris (even though I've lived in the area for almost 16 years). I learned something new today.

Since the OP is interested in museums (which are largely centered in the downtowns), public transport would work out reasonably well.

honestly it's great to hear the public transportation scene is improving downtown. most of the cons have moved to downtown so when I'm able to go to cons again, that might come in handy.

SR Harris is sewing heaven, hope you get a reason to go see it!

Considering that my hand-eye coordination is not sufficient for sewing or making any sort of garment, I probably will never have a reason to go.

Thread OP - looks like I'm in between the SR Harris store two locations, and I *do* sew, so I'll definitely check at least one of them out, thanks! :D

Well, I mean... it's America, most cities here have shit public transport but Sante Fe and Chicago have great museums.

Boston.

Frankly, very few U.S. cities are going to have good public transportation systems by European standards. New York City is your best bet. Everywhere else will be tricky, because most people rely on cars at least part of the time and the bus systems aren't great here. Some larger systems have commuter systems (rail that runs from suburbs to downtown) and a limited navigation of the city, plus bus systems. Chicago might work, for example.

Ironically, DC is probably the city that has the best public transportation system IME. Lived there for years without a car because I literally never needed one.

I enjoy DC but have been there recently.

In that case, I would say from personal experience that both Philly and New York are decent when it comes to the combination of public transportation + museums. Boston has some nice museums but as I haven't used the public transportation there, I can't weigh in on whether it's good or not. Chicago has decent public transportation but I've never been to the museums there, so that's another "maybe."

Having both been to some of Chicago's museums and taken public transport to get to them, I can say it's fairly easy to do (especially since there is the Museum Campus on the lake where you have a few museums all right next to each other and a dedicated L stop for it). The Museum of Science and Industry is a bit of an outlier and requires a Metra train to get there, but everything else that I'm aware of is accessible via the L.

Yup. I lived there for a summer internship and also have taken several trips there. Great public transportation. I didn't drive at that point at all.

From my experience Philly balances both of these criteria pretty well.

Chicago for sure. Dense and diverse but way more affordable than New York. Good public transit (I lived there for decades without a car and did fine), beautiful lakefront and lots of parks, cool shops, and excellent museums. The Art Institute is world class (google some of the world famous artworks that are there, it's mindblowing) and so is the Shedd Aquarium especially. And if you like live music at all, you can go hear something good almost every night.

I recommend you not go in winter, though, lol. Definitely take one of the architecture boat tours on the river, Chicago is rightly famous for its downtown buildings and that's one of the best ways to see them.

Dunno 100% about the public transport (they have the metro, but I've never ridden), but St. Louis has a ton of cool stuff to see - you could take two days just seeing everything in Forest Park! And the art museum, zoo, and a lot of other stuff is free.

Def New York. Decent public transit. Great museums.

Chicago is probably the best choice under those circumstances if you can go in the spring or fall (don't go in mid-summer, don't go in winter)

If not Chicago, then Seattle, San Francisco, New York, Boston.

As a NYer, I have to say NYC. Public transit at practically any and all hours of the night. Many museums, some are even free. Check out our amazing library! Which also hosts talks almost every week! Free! Plenty of events and happenings. Again, many free or low cost (not empire state building of course, but you can check NYC go for local events (among other websites). Find cheap tickets to bway shows, off off Broadway or theatre. Plus we have commuter trains if you want to head "upstate" and go for a nice nature walk/hike or visit a historic suburb.

I'll say that Philly and Boston are cute and have some good museums. Also Boston is good for shows before they premiere on bway/the traveling troupes they use are very good! Downside is the public transit closes early (at least when I've gone).

My friend just returned from NYC and loved it, so I say there. I really like LA, but I can't recommend it because the public transportation there is trash and I say that as someone who's used it a lot in the past.
