If I can suggest a dark fantasy with hopeful characters: Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

What does a nitty, gritty dark world mean in this context? Are we talking Game of Thrones or like the Last Unicorn?

OP

Don't know The Last Unicorn. But I specifically meant where death and violence and darkness happen, where war is portrayed realistically when it happens, when bad things happen and the heroes have to really work to get a happy ending. Doesn't have to be Game of Thrones level.

Dark-but-hopeful is by far my favorite type of content, pretty much across the board, so I def agree with this secret, even though I don't read much in the way of fantasy.

Also, I like the image used for the secret (great choice secret-maker!). There's so much going on there.

The King’s Ranger series by AC Cobble is a good fit for what you’re looking for. It lacks political intrigue though. His new series is called Warheit and that should be an absolute perfect fit for what you’re looking for based on the two novels so far but the series isn’t complete yet.

I like Jennifer Karen’s work, too, but it’s hard to find these days. She had some falling out with TOR and a bunch of her work got yanked. You can find it in libraries though.

Jennifer *Karon
I got it right both times but my phone changed it when I posted. Hopefully it doesn’t do it again :/

This reminds me of how disappointed I was when the second series of Being Human made that hard turn into darkness. I was expecting the humour and hope to last longer than it did before the show went completely dark.

Yet another reason to be bummed that the Dark Crystal Age of Resistance series was cancelled. I think a large part of what I loved about it is that it was very dark (if you changed nothing about the series besides replacing all the puppets with actors I can't imagine how it would be marketed as a kids show) but the heroes are still good people.

I'm good with 'dark but hope and a happy ending'. I personally just really hate 'grimdark grinding on and on with no hope or happiness ever'. Blech.

Since I read it as a youth, I don't remember if it was truly dark (certainly not dark dark, but there were elements of the darkness of reality and adulthood in it), I recommend a read or re-read of The Neverending Story. One of my favorite books. I might reread it now too.
