I don't mean this in a contrarian or argumentative way at all because your experience is obv valid and there's absolutely nothing about it to argue with. But man, I could not feel more differently. Huge fandoms are bliss to me. A smorgasbord of content to last me for years? Mountains of engagement? Tons of people to interact with, who not only share my interest but also cherish similar headcanons and preferences as I do? Could anything be better?

I got so used to being in huge fandoms that when I finally ended up with an OTP that was only medium-sized it was like my brain malfunctioned for eighteen months straight. It kept expecting dopamine, because OTP=dopamine, but after I blitzed through all the primo content in the first three months, all it could find was a trickle.

And now I've very recently gotten into a micro-pairing and I'm like, "This is torture though! How do people DO this??"

Reminds me of how I’ve been dabbling in another comm lately. I like that it’s big and active, but I’m kind of scared because it’s big and active. I feel like I’m at a big event and there are a bunch of things I like that I can’t get at home, but it’s crowded, and I have a thing about crowds, and I just wanna go home even if it’s sometimes dull or lonely. Fortunately, it’s the internet, so I can post both here and there as much or as little as I feel comfortable.

I saw them talking about us once. They were surprised we’re still kicking (fair) and think we have no chill compared to them (delusional).

As someone who's mostly been active in small fandoms, I think I get the appeal to big fandoms now. I wrote a couple fics for a huge fandom and the engagement for those fics were a lot of fun.

Larger fandoms open you up to meet more people. I think what is daunting to me is knowing how to find "my people". Small fandoms kind of force me to hang out with what little people there are and we manage to make it work...whereas large fandoms you work your way through groups to figure out where you best fit in.
And I'm not good at that NGL

I understand you, anon. My "half a dozen people and a shoelace" fandom experiences were overall much more pleasant than my experiences with larger fandoms. I find large fandoms isolating, ironically, because there's so much wank to avoid that I end up just shutting myself away and not interacting with anyone. In smaller fandoms, people are just excited to have another person on board to squee about the thing and I've always found them much friendlier as a rule.
