Anytime someone on here even suggests the possibility that someone is a troll, it seems to get this response, and I don't understand why. It's not like the idea that someone would troll FS is fundamentally preposterous or anything.

And I especially don't get the reaction in a case like this - this is not a secret that people disagree with. This is a secret that just plain doesn't make sense. It's extremely difficult to look at the movie and figure out what in the world OP saw that made them react this way. So I don't see how this is just simply a matter of people "having an opinion that someone doesn't like". It's an opinion that's also very deeply weird, on a topic that's frequently wanky.

I mean - do you agree with the secret? Or not even do you agree with it - do you think it makes sense? Do you get where OP is coming from?

Meanwhile, I have noticed that there are several people here who will immediately call troll as a way to shut down discussion of anything they don't like or disagree with. I especially suspect this is going on when the troll-calling includes snide insinuations that the person must be some sort of bigot for having an opinion on a wanky topic that doesn't fit in with the majority opinion of the fandom.

I don't agree with OP, but I can see where they're coming from. The Black Panther movies are American movies made for American audiences and that shows in the writing.

I don't know. Like, probably that's true? It's definitely plausible. But also there are sometimes bigoted and wanky posts, and it's plausible that some of them are made by trolls. The idea that people are trolling isn't ridiculous or anything.

Honestly like. Speaking personally, I do see a good number of posts that I immediately think are obvious trolls, because they're wanky and because they're often phrased in incredibly aggressive ways that leave no room for black and white. I also usually don't reply to call troll on them, because I know that if I do someone will immediately reply "Oh you're just a reflexive troll-calling troll". So I just don't engage.

But this is definitely a pattern that I've observed - excessively trolly posts, and posts that push back very aggressively on anyone who talks about posts being trolly, even when it seems pretty reasonable. It's basically creating a narrative that can be used to dismiss anyone who says that a post is trolly - "you're just obsessed with calling people a troll to dismiss their posts" - even when there are actually pretty good reasons for thinking the post is in fact trolling. And it's a pernicious narrative, because any attempt to argue against it gets framed as bad faith and obsession and so on.

For the record, I don't necessarily think OP is a troll.

But I also get why someone might think that. Because the thing is that OP isn't just saying that Black Panther is made for American audiences. They're specifically saying that Black Panther is made as a critique of American domestic and foreign policy intended to hold up Wakanda as a mirror to America to show Americans how bad America is. That's a very extreme claim and it seems pretty implausible if you know anything about Marvel movies. And they frame it in a way that's provocative - they go so far as to compare the movie to blackface.

Now, again, I'm not saying it's not sincere. I don't know. But I do understand why someone would think a secret like that was trolly. I definitely do *not* think that this is an example where someone is using troll calls to "immediately shut down discussion of anything they don't like". Especially because they didn't shut down anything! There's plenty of room for good-faith discussion, if OP wants to come in and explain where they were coming from. As far as I can tell, no one's made any attempt to do so.

So in conclusion: I think it's reasonable to think that some posts are trolls. I think it's weird how every post that talks about the idea of people trolling F!S gets this pushback of "oh, you're just addicted to calling people trolls, you're just trying to shut down discussion." I don't think that's what's going on in most cases where someone says that posts are trolling. And I don't think it's ridiculous or unreasonable to think that some posts are trolling.
