Splurge vs. save

[personal profile] philstar22 2023-02-27 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
What things will you spend the big bucks for the name brand/high quality, and what things do you go for the generic or cheapest version?

Re: Splurge vs. save

Splurge: Holidays

Save: Food and clothing. Food is unforgivable, really. I shouldn't be buying short-dated stuff, but I do (better short-dated steak than long-dated chicken nuggets, say I.) But clothing is allowable when it's from opp shops. Many's the high-quality garment I've bought for a few dollars from an opp shop, and it's low-impact environmentally and the money goes to charity too.

Save: most things, I really don't want to pay more than I have to for *things*.

Splurge: Stationery (I like pens that don't crap out on me and notepads with no bleed thrpugh) and shoes (because cheap, poor quality shoes are the fastest way to mess up your feet, knees, hips and back). Also butter, Kerrygold ftw.

splurge: holidays, good quality clothing I can wear when I eventually wind up looking for another job, replacement furniture

save: groceries (tend to buy home brand stuff), regular clothing

(I recently paid off mum’s credit card and while I don’t count it as a splurge it had been hanging over our heads for seven years so I count that as a win)

My vacuum cleaner. I tried two no-brand ones because I figured it wouldn't matter but they both sucked. Now I have a brand name vacuum and the thing actually does what it's supposed to do.

Splurge: appliances, purses, shoes

Save: everything else. The three splurges are the only things that are worth going for the highest quality I can manage. I used to include clothing in that list but most expensive name brand clothing is only slightly better than the cheap no name fast fashion shit that costs $12 on Amazon. I can’t afford true quality clothing.

Splurge: clothing, electronics, food. (i.e. boots theory)

Save: all forms of entertainment, travel, holidays

I splurge on clothing, accessories, fragrance, and sometimes makeup. I just like fashion and beauty items, and wearing items that look and/or feel cheap makes me sad. I grew up fairly poor, and my mother was incredibly cheap about absolutely everything except her beer, cigarettes, and pot, so I kind of have issues about cheap crap making me feel like I'm not worth nice things, which honestly, fuck that. I'm worth nice things if I say I am, and I do say I am, so that's that.

I have savings, though, and no credit card debt. I would never splurge on non-essentials if it meant eating into my savings or going into debt.

I save on food, because to me it's more of a chore than a pleasure, so I'd rather it not take up more money than necessary. I will freely admit that I should spend a bit more in order to eat healthier, rather than buy myself something pretty that I don't need. The problem is that eating healthier is more expensive AND it's more work (for someone with minimal kitchen skills and ADHD).

Big bucks: books, decent shoes (after much consideration, but not like - hundreds), really good food on special occasions.

Cheapest: pretty much all household stuff, like trash bags, cleaning stuff, etc. Work clothes - well, pretty much ALL clothes. Everyday food & drink.

Re: Splurge vs. save

(Anonymous) 2023-02-28 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
splurge: some/most groceries like bread, meat, butter, fresh produce. books, good shoes & clothes (found a sustainable clothes brand), some meds/certain painkillers, cat food

save on: some groceries (off brand cereal, instant coffee, cheeses, sweets),

I feel like I have tiers for this

Splurge:
- Safety (ie getting my car checked regularly, roadside assistance, house insurance, gettings dangerous things fixed)
- coffee beans
- food for guests
- special occasions

Middle range spending
- appliances (no point buying a toaster if it will break in axfew months)
- food for myself (I go for the highest quality at the cheapest price, which usually ends up in the middle range somewhere)
- Travel (I'll pay enough to be safe/ comfortable)

Cheap
- clothes if I'm buying new (bad habit I'm trying to get out of)
- Entertainment (I'll look out for good deals on things like movies tickets, and otherwise am not someone who typically goes to expensive concerts or festivals)

Stuff I'll try to get second hand first:
- baby clothes and other paraphenalia
- furniture (why buy something from ikea new when I can get it for half price already built is basically my motto, lol)

Re: Splurge vs. save

Splurge: winter boots (I've walked 2,600+ miles a year the last couple years, I need good shoes) hobbies (gardening, occasional fancy cooking, some cosplay), this year's vacation (haven't flown anywhere since 2015 and I'm turning 40.)

Save: 90% of my clothes are secondhand, I get a subsidized transit pass from work and walk a lot so I spend $65/year on transit, not counting my first real vacation in 8 years, and as for entertainment, I buy dvds secondhand or borrow them (and books/ebooks) from the library, and I'm a volunteer usher and see tons of plays for free, and I get into San Diego Comic Con for free through my work. And most of my vacations involve puttering around the house and maybe hiking. I don't eat meat and buy store brand pantry staples/toilet paper/toiletries.

And the cosplay I don't splurge on is made of thrift store finds. Old cotton sheets=gold.

I tend to go for the cheaper option for most things with the exception of dental products. Good mouthwash makes or breaks my day.

Splurge: electronic tablets, shoes, and art supplies.

Save: Nine tenths of my clothes ( clothing is a huge environmental problem otherwise ), and storage supplies. Sales here are my best bets.

I'm fairly middle of the road when it comes to food.

Hottest Cast

(Anonymous) 2023-02-28 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
What media - shows, movies, games, books, whatever - has the hottest cast, taken as a whole?
philstar22: (MCU: Thor naked)

Have to go with MCU. It has basically everyone I find hot. Even Bridget Regan had a small role.

Off the top of my head, Lost and Battlestar Gallactica had a bunch of stone cold hotties.

Speaking of stone cold hotties, oh my god, the main cast of The Good Place (minus Ted Danson, sorry Ted Danson) was super hot.

If I could cherry-pick S1 Mulder and S3/S4 Scully, then they would be my pick for hottest co-leads. The rest of the recurring cast...less so.

Vent

(Anonymous) 2023-02-28 07:03 am (UTC)(link)
I've been into media with small or nonexistent fandoms. It's ok I am almost always like that.
But I have massive craving to read a good fic. My older fandoms either do not spark joy or don't have any new decent fanfiction.
Argh
