Shipping characters is not an assessment of one's own character. It's just shipping. I've liked both healthy and unhealthy pairings in the past; they just happened to be what appealed to me at the time.

This, so much.

People trying to assert that their [insert anything they do here] PROVES they are good people, or at least superior to other people, actually tend to convince me of the opposite. Aside from its just being boring as fuck.

da

Absolutely. It's fiction. I don't need it to be "unproblematic" or "healthy" or "wholesome" or anything like that. (Those terms often actively drive me away!) A pairing is a dynamic I enjoy between characters I like. Simple as that.

I love healthy ships (I love unhealthy ones on occasion too) but I won't read any fics that use the "healthy relationship" tag. That's a red flag for a boring fic written by an overly self-righteous shipper.

Yep

OP

Somehow missed this before, but I actually agree! I *mostly* tend to go for hero/hero ships, but I've definitely shipped villain/villain before. I just tend not to like hero/villain because I don't like things being unequal (and in the fandom from the secret, the awfulness is one-sided; C's done horrible things to A but A's never done anything to C).

A and C became friends pretty fast, and then C screwed A over...A forgave them, C did it again...A forgave them, C did it again. And C's never apologized for anything, and has been like "this is who I am, if you don't like it it's your problem". Eventually A was like "I've had enough of this" and now they tolerate each other when they have to but aren't friends anymore.

A and B met, were pretty antagonistic at first, with *both* being kind of crappy to each other, but talked about things and apologized. So they're not perfect either, but the difference to me is that they communicate.

Anyway, I have no problem shipping characters who are both equally awful to each other, I think that can be a lot of fun.

And of course, I don't actually have an issue with people shipping hero/villain even though it's not personally my thing. I guess since I haven't really gone into it with my friend, I for some reason feel the need to give long explanations here, but I'm probably putting way too much thought into it!
