(Anonymous) 2023-03-17 06:04 am (UTC)(link)... but, it says a lot about the current era of the internet when the most used sites for fandom congregations are: Either designed solely for images in mind, with a terrible reply system (Tumblr); or one of only images, deliberately few words, no nuance, and designed to enrage people (Twitter). That shit is straight out of Fahrenheit 451, with the exception the last site wants anger, but only so they can monetize it.
Discord is decent, but as someone else mentioned, it's more chitchatty, and less to have written stuff to be preserved for a community in public. Reddit works for that whole "long written stuff" thing, but given how communities overlap, how the upvote and downvote system made everything worse, AND the fact it's nearly 100% male dominated, it's a deluge of memes and toxic fandom. Facebook is... Facebook.
We have a community of fandom roleplayers here, but given not as many of us write in our digital journals anymore (I personally use a physical journal, in my case), and most of the fandom are on the other platforms mentioned, I don't know if we could even have those days back. To this day, I still miss forums, and they were honestly my favorite way of interacting with a community.
Honestly, I think I'm looking at the past with rose-tinted glasses. The bigger a community is, the more drama that will exist, and both sites I revile are simply the easier way to share images and on-point data... but as someone else noted, focused more on the "me," and not so much to interact.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-17 06:09 am (UTC)(link)The reason that Tumblr and Twitter out-competed LJ/Dreamwidth is because they had much, much, much more powerful sharing and discovery features.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-17 07:34 am (UTC)(link)But, I believe the algorithm leading Twitter is what's caused everything terrible about fandom to intensify to the point you're better off deleting your account. 400 letters is not a good way to debate politics. Not to mention an algorithm would go against Dreamwidth's principles of privacy.
