(Anonymous) 2023-03-19 05:57 am (UTC)(link)- A Laurence Olivier movie
- an 80s tv series
- the forever perfect 1995 tv series
- the Kiera Knightly 2006 (?) movie which is also, obviously, pretty good
- the first Bridget Jones (as you mentioned)
- Bride and Prejudice (Bollywood version, which has the best Mr Collins imho)
- aaaaand a modern Mormon version which is also weirdly pretty good.
I'm pretty sure there are a few others though. And this is also not counting Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, the Lizzie Diaries web series/ Jane Austen Book Club/ Lost in Austen and similar more transformative/expansive adaptations, and the countless movies you can say have drawn more or less heavily from P&P.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-19 07:04 pm (UTC)(link)Oh shit I know what you're saying now. Yes it would be great if there was a modern version as fun as Bridget Jones 1 (and ironically a Bridget Jones like character would work well in an adapted Anne role).
Honestly, 2022 Persuasion should have been trying for this - the Fleabag-esque 4th wall breaking and hot messiness of Anne would have worked much better in a modern version. It still likely would have been a total trainwreck but at least it wouldn't have been as insulting as what we actually got.
Personally Clueless is my favourite modern JA adaptation. Obviously a highschool setting wouldn't exactly work for Persuasion (maybe late college at the earliest?), but if someone could write a script as excellent as that (see also Easy A) for it we could be in business. The challenge would of course be balancing the poignant pining romance with humour...
