I always understood it as a social thing, like, "I can sit down with my dinner while this person I like is also eating." type thing. Like that southern lady on tiktok.

That's how it originated afaik. It comes from Korea where eating is a very social thing but a lot of people who are living alone don't have that social experience anymore so it started out as a way to have a "social eating" event with others in the same situation via the internet.
What it turned into is people grotesquely goring themselves on insane and unhealthy amounts of food, often with a certain ASMR factor.

NAYRT - Thank you for explaining this! I was oblivious to the whole cultural aspect of it, but it makes so much sense in that context and I can totally see the point of it. I'm the only child of a single parent, so I've never had an 'everyone comes together when dinner is ready' experience of eating, but I've sometimes longed for that kind of ritual social experience-- so I can totally see how if one grew up with that and then didn't have it anymore, they might really miss it.

The version where someone eats a LOT of food for the entertainment of the audience was the version I knew about, and I still find that really squicky, but it's good to know that's not actually the whole picture.
