I shipped Character A (male) with Character B (female).
Then they were both revealed to be gay.
I still like the ship.
I can't tell anyone. The fandom would tear me apart.

I also ship A with various male characters, so it's not like
I'm lacking for content. But I still think there's something
between A and B, and I can never, ever discuss it.

B!S: I headcanon B as having a nonbinary partner and I'm
not sure if the fandom would be okay with that, so I keep
my mouth shut about that too.

I still like Shiro/Allura on the DL, so I feel your pain. It was never my main ship for either character but damn do they look pretty together.

Damn it, I responded in the wrong place. FFS.

"I still think these two gay characters have the hots for each other"

Or maybe men and women can just be friends, OP

(Anonymous) 2023-03-23 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, they can just be friends, like anybody else.

But then fandom wouldn't be half as fun.

I don't think they are saying they have something in canon? They are only talking about their personal shipping preferences.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-23 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT but tbh I would read the comment as saying that they think there's something going on in canon

But, you know, whatever

(Anonymous) 2023-03-23 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Literally every character "can just be friends", But it's a lot more fun to imagine them together. duh.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-24 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
OP said they shipped them before they were revealed to be gay.

And, also sometimes, writers create chemistry between characters who aren't supposed to have it. And sometimes writers decide a character is gay halfway through when that hadn't always been the plan.

And, also sometimes, writers create chemistry between characters who aren't supposed to have it.

See: my fandom where even most of the straight male fans think that the male lead had more legit chemistry going on with the other male lead than with his actual canon female love interest.

Have you ever searched out and voluntarily read a fic about a man and woman being friends? I bet the answer is no.

Oh man. I get this. Back when I was into Harry Potter, I was really into the idea of Dumbledore/McGonagall. Even after we found out he was gay.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-23 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Same hat. This is how I feel about Knock Out/Arcee, maybe I could point out that the versions that are canonically gay are from a different continuity, but not sure how well it would work.

(I also ship Arcee with other Ms, and Fs, characters and it's not like this is my fave between them, but it's still a fun one.)

I'm not sure what fandom this is, but it totally sounds like something I would do. I haven't shipped a gay man and a lesbian (I came pretty close to it, but he was a serial killer so there were bigger issues than just that!) but I have shipped a couple of gay man/straight woman pairings and one straight man/lesbian one before, so I get it. IRL you obviously shouldn't try to like, set up your gay friend with someone of the opposite sex or something, but I feel like in fandom it's just kind of...whatever, and doesn't really matter, at least to me. I realize this is probably an unpopular opinion, though...I've never felt comfortable sharing that I shipped those pairings because I know the reaction it would get.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-23 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I also don't see what's the issue, as long as you don't actually believe that someone can just turn "not gay". I thought we had already moved on from the "Shipping = activism" thing...

Related: I think cross-orientation sex pollening fic, where characters get sex pollened and have sex with someone they ordinarily wouldn't be attracted to, is hot. Including when it's gay characters getting sex pollen'd into a het hookup.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-24 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh agreed!

(Anonymous) 2023-03-23 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man that’s rough because I agree with you that fandom would tear you apart for it. Obviously it’s fine to ship however you want but it sucks that you don’t have anyone to talk to about it and share the shipping fun. I’m sorry, nonnie :(

this

[personal profile] lumy12 2023-03-24 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
That's frustrating, OP. I have "made" a lesbian character bi in fic in order to pair her with a guy and gotten some shit for it. I don't see any issue with this, given that canon does not have her explicitly being repulsed by dudes. One person said something like "it's not like there aren't enough straight couples out there" -- um, yes, sure, but that's beside the point! I'm feeling the sparks for THIS pairing, and if you don't like it, just backbutton out, is it so hard? ...I guess it IS that hard for some people.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-24 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I get you. I ship Wei Wuxian and Wen Qing and thank God the fandom seem more open to rare pairings, no matter how ridiculous/impossible they sound like.

I was one of those really early Tracer/Winston shippers. People embraced Tracer’s canonical girlfriend, but I still kinda miss the old ship.

(Who even is Winston’s main ship these days? Wrecking Ball?)

(Anonymous) 2023-03-24 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
My first thought when I saw this secret was how I shipped Mercy/Solider 76 in ye olden Overwatch days, so yeah.

(Anonymous) 2023-03-24 10:14 am (UTC)(link)
The closest thing to this that had happened to me in fandom was when I (and a lot of other people) had shipped two guys until a new chapter of the game the characters originated from came out. In the chapter both guys single parents had gotten married which made them step-siblings - and let me tell you the absolute pandemonium that came out when everyone suddenly turned on that ship for technically being 'incest' and therefore too evil to ship ¬_¬

Literally, I was working on a long fic and I suddenly had a slew of these idiots who would come out with things like "Oh, so you WOULD sleep with YOUR own siblings if given the chance???"
It was a fun time to learn how stupid people can choose to be.
