Hating one of the most widely lauded albums of all time is in fact a controversial option that I would get a lot of shit for in music fandom circles.

Not sure why you have to be dismissive to the point of rudeness about it. (shrug)

I'm not trying to be rude, I'm saying it's not anything to feel ashamed of. People should like what they like!

I wonder if the "(shrug)" made it sound/appear dismissive in tone. Maybe I should ask this on the writing site I belong to. Asking about how "buh-bye" can be interpreted was useful. Maybe I'll have the same luck with this one.

AYRT - Okay, in that case I'm sorry. It really did come across, to me at least, as very dismissive. Like, not just "You're fine, not everybody has the same taste in music," kind of dismissive, but, "So what?" kind of dismissive. But as we know, tone is hard to parse in text. Thank you for responding and clearing things up, I appreciate you doing that. :)

"But as we know, tone is hard to parse in text."

Is it? I've had this debate with writers and non-writers a like, and I get the impression that this might not always be difficult. Certain spellings; word choices; punctuation; and syntax constructions can go a long way in establishing tone in text.

Yes, it's been pretty well established--with actual studies--that tone is frequently difficult to parse in text. You seem to want to get into it though, so I won't split hairs: IMO the tone of the comment in question was difficult not to interpret as dismissive. Knowing that greghousesgf didn't mean it that way, I just reread it, and you know what? It still reads as dismissive.

But she said it wasn't meant to be and I believe her.

AYRT

I read that comment and found it dismissive due to the use of the (shrug) stage action. I think omitting that would have changed the tone of the comment.
