(Anonymous) 2023-03-31 10:24 am (UTC)(link)I wonder if the "(shrug)" made it sound/appear dismissive in tone. Maybe I should ask this on the writing site I belong to. Asking about how "buh-bye" can be interpreted was useful. Maybe I'll have the same luck with this one.

Is it? I've had this debate with writers and non-writers a like, and I get the impression that this might not always be difficult. Certain spellings; word choices; punctuation; and syntax constructions can go a long way in establishing tone in text.
