No

Slim pickings back then maybe?

Then again a big facet of Fandom is "omg these two characters stood next to each other clearly they're fucking!"

(Anonymous) 2023-04-03 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Spock/Kirk came into existence right at the very beginning of this being a thing that people did. M/M shipping was functionally not a thing before that. Like, people did not have the mindset of going around looking for stuff to ship. So "slim pickings" doesn't really seem to fit the case.

NAYRT but slash was absolutely a thing before TOS. TOS had a huge impact on the zine scene (I think even started it? I can’t remember my fandom history on that.) but contemporary pastiches of Holmes/Watson exist and that pairing has never had a break in fanworks in over 130 years.

Man, I'm so sad that the fourth movie has been in limbo forever and will likely stay there. I love those movies - especially the first one.
Yes, I know all the criticisms (especially when it comes to the second) and I agree with a lot of it but at the end of the day they brought me so much joy and I still love rewatching them and reading fic in that verse.
I was so happy to find out about the tie-in novels also. :)
(I do stay away from most of the fandom (does it still exist) cause I always feel like I'd have to have a long disclaimer that yes, I do love Uhura but no Spock/Uhura did not work for me and yeah, only partially cause I ship Spock/Kirk...)

OG!Spirk is totally fine, but I'm just not fandom-y about them at all.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, at least the fourth movie isn't completely dead, like it seemed it might be for a while there. And Chris Pine seems to want another movie to happen, at the very least. So, maybe they'll get all the moving parts working together at some point and it'll move out of pre-production.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-03 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Baffling. Absolutely and completely baffling.

Like, it's one of those things where, I don't even ship it particularly, but how can you go back to TOS and *not* see it? Like I don't even understand what you're watching if you think this. It feels like we're in parallel universes.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-03 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man we're total opposites OP because I ship them in ToS like burning but the reboot version of their dynamic and characters left me so cold, especially Kirk who's such a fucking asshole. But hey we all like/dislike different things.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-03 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I am the exact opposite. I always figured people shipped New Spirk just because they like shipping slash. I’m alwas surprised when anyone says they felt chemistry between them. Individually they have as much personality as a wet sock and together they’re almost as interesting as watching paint dry.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-03 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I ship TOS Spock/Kirk like burning—they have SUCH good chemistry! They just read as deeply in love and deeply married! They’re so solid together I can’t really imagine them anywhere else (except with Bones, of course. A triumvirate on the bridge and in the captain’s quarters).

In AOS, however, it’s Bones/Kirk all the way. Spock to me is deeply boring in those movies, and Quinto just doesn’t have chemistry with Pine the way Urban does.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Quinto didn't have amazing chemistry with *anyone* in those films. Don't get me wrong; I think he's capable of chemistry, but he wasn't given a lot to work with. On the other hand, Nimoy had chemistry with everyone on TOS, up to and including The Enterprise.

Yes, to all of this!

Oh man. I mean...it was all THERE.
I...really dislike the new Trek, and the new Spock and Kirk. I mean - just LOATHE.
I went into it wanting it to be awesome and it just...was not.

But I watched TOS as a kid and it was...so obvious! Even to me, even then.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Bwahahahahahaha! Kids these days. Such a hoot.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Agree, FWIW. Even as someone rapidly approaching middle age, TOS is just too clunky and dated for me to get into it, I guess. The reboot...I feel like it was a bad adaptation of TOS, but not at all bad on its own terms. And yeah, reboot Kirk and Spock had good chemistry IMO.

I do kind of feel like I understand where the TOS fans are coming from, though, because as a huge X-Files fan who thought Mulder and Scully had great chemistry, I can DEFINITELY see the industry making a reboot at some point, and totally failing to capture the staid, cerebral, meeting-of-the-minds dynamic I loved so much about M & S, and then people who were babies when the show ended saying how much cooler the new M & S are, and how they have so much more chemistry, because the new versions are way more overtly sexy and the chemistry between them is actively spotlighted by the narrative or whatever.

Basically I feel like, if you get TOS then you get it, and I respect that. But also, it is in fact okay to just shrug and say, "Maybe if I'd been there, I'd get it, but I wasn't there and present me doesn't get it."

I never understood K/S from TOS. I also don't understand it in AOS. I'm too much of a Bones girl.
pantswarrior: Dr. McCoy looking good in a t-shirt. (de is hot)

Ahhhh, a kindred spirit. :D

Theoretically, the best ship is Spock/Bones

Agreed. Spock/Bones >>>> Kirk/Spock

Like, I don't want to be the guy saying 'oh, this is a pretty skillful troll secret', because obviously you're on fandom SECRETS for a reason, and we can all have different opinions, and I tend to hate when people call troll on things that are... like, totally reasonable for a person to have as a secretly-held thought or feeling.

But this is just so out there to me.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, this is A SECRET

Tbf I've never got into TOS (too young and too not-American) and I think TOS is just boring. Also knowing what we know about Shatner now just makes me impossible to ship anyone with his character.

I don't see any chemistry in AOS either though. There were much more chemistry with Bones.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-04 06:54 am (UTC)(link)
You're either a troll or a moron. I'm going with troll.

"Someone has a different opinion than I do; they must be stupid or lying!"

Tell me you lack emotional maturity without telling me you lack emotional maturity.

Definitely nothing to ship here...
