Do what you want. Seems silly to me tbh because so many are so vocal about refusing to read WIPs. Maybe if you wrote more you’d get more engagement. Depending on the fandom you’re missing out on approximately 25% of the fandom seeing your work or as much as ~85-90ish. WIPs suck and it’s a huge no no to leave kudos on them because the next update may contain some stuff you don’t approve and then ever after you’re associated with that fic. It could be something small that you don’t like or it could become an RPF pedo rape fic (unfortunately that isn’t a random description that just plucked out of the air)

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Giving kudos to WIPs is a huge no-no? I don't want to sound like the 'anti' troll, but to argue that you should be afraid (rather than just reasonably hesitant) to give kudos on a WIP really sounds like a result of anti culture that should be pushed back on, rather than accepted as the way of things.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 01:37 am (UTC)(link)
The phrasing is poor to say it’s a huge no no, but it’s always been normal to reserve kudos for completed fic. That doesn’t mean no one does it but completed fic is far more popular.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
I understand that many people do this, and that completed fic in general is more popular, but I think it's a still a stretch (or more bad phrasing) to call not giving kudos to WIPs 'normal'. Both the 'normal' and the 'no-no- phrasing imply social ramifications for giving kudos to WIPs, which just isn't true at all. Plenty of people do it - which you can see from the number of kudos popular WIPs do have.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Stopped after stories I liked turned into stories I hated, as there is no way to "take back" a kudos.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yep, definitely a fair call. I am just pushing back on the idea that it's somehow breaching a social norm to give kudos to a WIP. It's not, it's just a preferential thing.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
Since when is "don't give kudos on a WIP" an anti sentiment??? The word anti is starting to lose all meaning.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 08:19 am (UTC)(link)
It was the idea that doing so is a 'hard no-no' because of the minor possibility that the WIP might later contain some content that the kudos giver doesn't want to be associated with. This brings to mind anti culture, and the fear that antis might trawl through kudos of inappropriate fics and attack the named users. Which personally I think is unlikely.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
The way it was phrased sounded like anti phrasing. Not giving kudos to a WIP if you don't want to is perfectly fine.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
OK, so there are many reasons why an author doesn't get a lot of engagement, and yes the WIP thing is one of them.

But the "no kudos on a WIP" thing is just you, man. What do you think is gonna happen if you give kudos to a fic that turns out to be RPF pedo rape fic? You think the police are trolling the kudos on AO3 looking for people to arrest for a not-crime? You think the non-existent algorithm on AO3 is going to keep not recommending any fics at all because it doesn't exist? Any people who would hate you for your kudos and actively go looking for them are people you WANT to hate you.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
My thoughts exactly.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
NAYRT
it just... annoys me. I am not going to be aggressive and negative about hating the fic in the comments. So I want just un-kudos it and I can't. Also a lot of people sort by kudos and it means this fic can become popular.
Anyway I try to comment on WIPs, but I do not kudos them

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Because shitty little antis like to go to that kind of fic and see who is "enjoying" it and hassle them. A friend of mine was chased out of fandom this way - they decided to come for her because she wrote an unpopular pairing and then other fics where she had left kudos were "evidence". I'm on the side of ignoring them (and they certainly tried to go after me by association to my friend) but I am well aware that doesn't work for everyone and you shouldn't have to do it.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)
That's got nothing to do with the WIP thing, though. Unless all of these fics your friend left kudos on were WIPs that too unexpected left-turns, your friend presumably knew what sort of fic she was giving kudos too.

And I really question how many fics suddenly veer into that sort "controversial" territory that "don't give kudos to WIPs" should ever become a common wisdom.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 07:18 pm (UTC)(link)
No kudos on a WIP is common because you can’t take them back.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't realize kudos were a finite commodity....

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
But do you realise giving kudos means ‘I like this’ and that liking a wip with early promise doesn’t mean you’ll like the completed fic. I don’t waste time on WIPs anymore but used to and never once did it finish even half as strong as started. Kudos for WIPs just means more ‘teehee dunno what I’m doing’ or ‘so busy at school so this is just a short update, comment if you want more!

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
.... You do realize that kudos aren't the coins you put in the fanfic vending machine right?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Try telling that to OP.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Ok, Hey OP, kudos aren't coins you put in the fanfic vending machine.

Now that that's out of the way, I'd still like to discuss why anyone would be so mad about making someone happy for five seconds because that person later went on to do something totally legal. "oh noez, i left kudos on a work that i enjoyed so far but later didn't like... i must never give kudos for a WIP again..." ????

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Why do you think anyone is mad or is trying to withhold happiness? People are reserving final judgment until the end and that’s perfectly normal. Some people choose not to and engage with WIPs in all kinds of ways. But obviously not to the same extent and not always in the same ways.
OP really does seem to think kudos are the magic currency you put into the internet and get fanfic—-and they want some. If op wants instant gratification, they can post their completed work and it will get more engagement, wether you think that’s how it should be or not.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's right there in the comment I responded to first:

"it’s a huge no no to leave kudos on them because the next update may contain some stuff you don’t approve and then ever after you’re associated with that fic"

Reserve final judgement, fine. But THIS is not that. This is deliberately saying that you ENJOY the work but you REFUSE to say so until you are ASSURED that they will continue to conform to your moral framework. It's the commenter version of what the secret OP is doing. "I won't write anymore until you engage" "I won't engage unless you sign a purity pledge" They're both douches.

I rarely engage with WIPs because I don't like getting invested only for it to never be finished. You don't engage with WIPs because you want it morally vetted first. We are not the same.

Yeah, I stopped reading WIPs long ago because I got tired of getting really invested in a fic only to have it be abandoned halfway through. These days if a fic isn't marked as 'Completed,' I'm not touching it.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Same, though people have started marking them as complete but once you read them they're obviously not. And then they show up again at the top of the search... still marked complete.... and then again.... and again.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-15 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I’ve seen that and I hate it! I really need to finally download an extension for my browser that makes it easier for AO3 to filter out the asshats and DNW stuff.
