Um, yeah. Obviously, they're more sci-fi than horror. Are there people who argue the contrary?

I see them on horror lists a lot. But honestly I never saw them as horror. It doesn't even feel cross-genre like the Alien movies or Event Horizon. Not scary enough.

I don't think they fit cleanly into either horror or sci-fi. Action blockbuster with horror and sci-fi elements is probably the cleanest description.

If think it should primarily be in a mega monster/ creature feature type genre (where movies like Jurassic Park and Jaws are the pinnacle of the genre, but movies like The Meg and even Sharknado fit as well - kinda like how you can say The Exorcist and the umpteenth Friday the 13th sequel are both horror).

And then those movies have their subgenres (for JP, that's action and sci fi; for Jaws, that's horror/thriller, IIRC).

Yeah that's fair!

The comparison I was thinking of was King Kong, which definitely fits in that category as well.

For me, I'd only call two of them good. For the others, I'd say two are meh and two are bad, but I enjoy one of the bad ones (not sure if it's despite the badness or because of it).

Which is hte other good one, and which are the two bad ones?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-18 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
ayrt

IMO, Jurassic World was the other good one, Jurassic World Dominion and Jurassic Park III (the one I enjoy) are bad. So, for both the Park and World movies, in their respective trilogies, it goes 1 - Good, 2 - Meh, 3 - Bad, for me.

I'll always consider them adventure sci-fi!

The film (I've only seen the first), yeah. The book was more towards horror partly because it was more graphic.
