What's holding you back? Pandemic/health fears? Time? Money? Distance? The inertia of not going anywhere any more?

These have different solutions. I want you to do what you want to do, but I don't want to bully you for keeping yourself safe, you know?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
OP. Mental health mostly. I haven't had the energy for going anywhere other than work in at least a couple months.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I find sometimes forcing myself to get out helps and gives me momentum to get out of my mental health rut.

But you know yourself best. Hope you are able to do something you like soon!

da, and this. I'll sit there going "I don't want to go out, I don't want to do this thing, I should just stay home" but then I force myself to go do it anyway and every single time, I end up having a great time. My mind is my own worst enemy and I've learned that I need to stop listening to it when it does things like that.

There is a Frank Turner lyric that I greatly relate to and use as inspiration to remind myself that sometimes going outside is the best option, even when I think I don't want to:

why are you sat at home
you're not designed to be alone
you just got used to saying no
so get up and get down and get outside

I really enjoyed D&D and also it was really nice to go back into the theater. There's something really comforting about the whole experience. It's really nice getting a cherry slushee and popcorn, it's really nice hearing everyone else laughing at all the jokes, it's just good.

But also, don't force yourself to do things that you aren't comfortable with, if you don't feel up to it you don't feel up to it.

what's holding me back in lack of any movies that sound all that interesting to me other than what I've already seen like Everything Everywhere, etc.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-21 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That's been my issue years before the pandemic. Most movies these days don't rouse one iota of interest from me. 2023, though, is a very busy year for me movie wise. I've got my eye on TWO! XD

Probably gonna get yelled at here but I'm so sick of superheroes I could shit.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
AYRT

OMG YES JFC can we do something else, please????

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Well, don't watch 'em. Just let everybody else have their fun.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is that superhero movies (and other franchise movies) are like kudzu, they choke out everything else

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's ok to not like things, but don't be a dick about the things you don't like. There are<\i> other types of movie in wide release still.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
MCU movies absolutely do take oxygen away from other genres of movie, that's just a fact.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
DA

the problem for me is that it's not only MCU movies. There are A LOT of different superhero movies up all the time and if not them then another franchise/remake. (Maybe that's what you mean, top)

I prefer self contained movies with original characters and stories. I'm absolutely exhausted by the current cinema scene.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
There is a lot less variety at the cinema now. The studios make big money on franchises so that’s what they focus on. If someone wants to see anything else, they’re unlikely to find it on the big screen :(

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 06:45 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you!
They take the most popular time slots, they choke all the other movies from being made.
I watch a lot of different movies but because I have luxury of time and living in a big city. Not everyone has it. Sometimes you go to the movies and all you can see Marvel shit #1, Marvel shit #2, Not Marvel Superhero shit #1. People aloud to be annoyed at that

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
People being too damn loud over that.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Not as loud as people pretending that liking superhero movies is still a nerd culture *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 04:38 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

Those people aren’t everywhere in the same way as the people complaining about superhero movies being shoved down their throats, or the people complaining about those people who are sick of superhero movies because they still like them.

I’m sure people who “pretend that liking superhero movies is still nerd culture” are still very much around in big numbers, but they’re not really as omnipresent as the others. It feels more anecdotal to find them everywhere. Maybe it’s also anecdotal to not find them everywhere, but I almost never hear people saying that or complaining about that compared to people just complaining about the movies or complaining about people complaining about the movies.

And this is just a nitpick on my part, but as much as they’ve become mainstream too, superhero movies are still kind of nerd culture. A lot of nerdy people still enjoy them(although obviously not all nerds do), and they started out as a nerd culture thing more than anything else. I know that some people think that nerd culture and mainstream culture can never overlap, but I disagree. I think that it honestly feels a bit gatekeepy to say that superhero movies are no longer nerd culture, like you can’t be a nerd and still like them. I’m sure that’s not what you’re actually saying, but that’s how it feels to me.

I wanted to see Spiderman 3 No Way Home but dumb restrictions stopped me. No I will not mask to see a movie. I didn't care enough about antman 3 to go. I want the experience but it's got to be a movie I really want to spent out on and risk having ruined by some idiot playing with their phone through it.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You are an idiot.

(Anonymous) 2023-04-22 07:34 pm (UTC)(link)
The mask goes UNDER your eyes. Hope that helps.

Holy hell, for a second I thought I wrote this secret. I've been dying to get back into theatres to see Marvel movies since it used to be the tradition with me. But I just can't bring myself to go back into a theatre.
