Is cruelty to cats a thing in movies? I can't think of any movie where a cat was hurt, just dogs.

I think it used to be common, more.

Yes? Cats are getting run over quite a lot. Or they "sense" whatever the evil thing in a horror movie is and get killed/eaten by it. (Granted, those are not for comedy purposes)

So common. It’s a huge turn off for me and I keep running into it in otherwise innocuous things like “Schitt’s Creek” (two or three cat deaths) and “Only Murders In the Building.” But also I remember watching “The Shape of Water” and s2 of “Stranger Things” in the same week and just. Ugh. It’s a cheap and shitty type of comedy/horror that I despise.

big handshake-- and yeah, for OMitB, it's definitely a comedy thing, to the person who asked if that ever happens. (not to mention like... just that 'cat getting hurt' is a stock sound effect? Or so many cartoons??)

like, I know 99% of The Shape of Water is up my alley and I'll love it, but that ONE thing has had me not watching it all this time.

Especially after losing my cat, I just can't.

Yeah, why is (fake) cruelty to cats okay in films but not cruelty to dogs?

There's this whole meme dating back to Medieval times about cats being evil and aloof and therefore I think it's made it more socially acceptable. Cruelty to dogs is nearly always played for tragedy (unless it's a small—read feminine—dog) but cruelty to cats is somehow funny, and I hate it.

Nayrt, but now that you mention the fact that cruelty to small, feminine, "purse dogs" is played for laughs more often than tragedy, just like cruelty to cats, I have a sneaking suspicion it has something to do with cats also being "feminine coded".

Because cruelty to women is also often portrayed as humorous, but god forbid something bad happen to the male hero or his male friends.

Cruelty to cats in media is more commonplace than cruelty to dogs, and it's used frequently in offscreen or 'subtle' ways. Where cruelty to a dog is generally used to evoke anger towards the character who does it and pity for the dog/dog's owner, cruelty to a cat is often barely given a second glance--the person who performs it is generally not a 'good' character but there's not as much thought given to the cat/cat's owner who's the victim. It's a media trope to the point that that I'm not surprised you'd miss it if you weren't looking for it. It ties into the same trope that having a character who owns cat(s) is shorthand for showing they're mentally ill, or evil, or both.

Sadly it's a mindset that carries over into real life as well--casual mentions of harming or antagonizing cats happens way more often than with almost any other animal (snakes are a very close second).

(I'm a vet tech and I work exclusively with cats, this is a topic that comes up surprisingly frequently at various CE conferences I've been to.)

NAYRT-- CE is continuing education

CE = continuing education, in my state vet techs need so many hours of education a year to be able to maintain our licenses. Easiest way to do that is to go to a weekend veterinary conference and rack up hours all at once so you aren't having to attend numerous evening sessions throughout the year. :}

I am fascinated that it comes up in vet tech conferences! It's something I noticed but no one ever seems to comment on. Part of the reason why I have one of my cats (the black one in the icon) was because the person who found her was really worried about her wandering the streets around Halloween.

Anyway, vet techs are the best so hats off to you. It's a really hard job and y'all deserve more appreciation than you get.

This. I also work with companion animals. There is a huge disparity between the veterinary care that dogs get and that dogs get. People are way less likely to pay for expensive procedures for a cat than a dog or even provide basic veterinary care.

No kidding! It frustrates me how much the research into cat medicine lags behind most other animals (possibly excluding exotics). I mean come on we've used some medications for like 20+ years now for cats and the companies STILL won't cough up the time or money to get them actually labeled for use in cats...

Yeah, cruelty to cats in movies or shows (played for laughs) usually involves the cat spinning on something and screaming/yowling the way cats do, when it goes flying. Imo, the reason I've laughed as a kid was because the cat was always alright in the end. Like they show the cat landing on all four paws and walking away. However as a kid, anything being "yeeted" out a window was hilarious.

That’s the only way I would laugh at that as a kid too. It would be funny to me only if I saw the cat safety land. Otherwise, I would get legitimately worried or upset about it.

there's a popular 80's christmas movie where a cat is electrocuted and burnt up. i saw it as a kid and it upsets me to this day.

It helps that it’s not my type of humor anyways, but that part is one of the main reasons I hate that movie.
