How do you choose a title for your fanfic?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-25 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of my least favorite things about posting a fic. I usually BS a title loosely connected to a story, but my good old-faithful method is to pick a line out of a song lyrics from a favorite artist and find something that fits enough.

Honestly I don't know. Titles are the hardest part for me.

Either a song lyric or song title. Titles are hard.

Is it "How to convince me never to read this story", Alex?

There was a trend in fandom awhile ago to be very Friends about it - all the titles were similar to "The One With the _____ " which honestly as a reader I appreciated because it actually helped me remember the fic and title.

As a writer, often it's a quote or a line taken directly from the fic. I try not to do song lyrics but I can understand the ease of that path.

That, or a line from the fic itself. But usually a song or poem line or quote.

For my Strangers Things fic, it's a partial lyric from an 80s song relevant to the story, a song that came out before or during the specific time period when the fic is set.

When I was writing a lot of prompt fic for a Teen Wolf Kink Meme, I used a lines or partial lines from the show for titles.

Sometimes it's a play on words that maybe only makes complete sense to me, and sometimes, it has to do with something significant that a character says or does in the fic.

all my House fics had titles beginning with the letter I because the first two happened to and I thought it was a good gimmick so I kept doing it

It's different for every fic. Sometimes it's a line from the fic, sometimes it's a play on a line said in canon (but never an actual line said in canon), sometimes it's just a vague phrase or word that I think fits it somehow. I never use song lyrics because I try to keep my fic titles to something that someone else hasn't already used (preferably at all, but at least within the fandom).

Pretty much this, for me. Sometimes I'll use a line of poetry, especially if the poem it comes from was an epigraph for the fic.

Sometimes I'll code-name a fic while writing it, and maybe derive a title from that. Or I'll just have an idea in mind already. Once in a blue moon, I'll use a song title/lyric, or a phrase from the fic itself (or create the title first to be used in the fic). Other times, it's just random.

NGL I went through a cinema loving phase so at some point I began to see my fic titles as movie titles. I think of the theme(s) of the fic, what was the working title and can I somehow find a title by reworking words/phrases, does the title seem attention grabbing enough without seeming too wordy or too vague, will the title seem clever/funny/ironic/full of deeper meaning if a reader were to finish the fic and look back up at the title?

After writing a few dozen fics in the last couple of years, I believe my approach doesn't garner more interest/viewership nor any engagement from any readers that indicate to me anyone gives any flying fucks about my fic titles.
But I have fun creating titles this way. It's like a fun little game I play with myself for my own enjoyment.

Song lyrics, song titles, character names for original work, some random relevant reference to the canon for fanfic, or in the case of the one I am currently stalled on, 'Untitled story.' >_>

I just follow the Friends method. The One With, The Fic where X Happens, etc. It is fanfic, there is no need to get all arty and precious over it.

When I wrote fanfic, I actually tried to find something that linked to the theme. With one story that involved the main character being able to see people's dreams against his will, I chose a title that was associated with night time.
