*shrugs* An engagement is a commitment, but it's not that huge. I wouldn't be surprised if they call it off before they actually make it down the aisle. Married at 20 I would side-eye alongside you, though - I grew up in a super Conservative small town, and even the people I went to high school with waited until they were 22-25 to tie the knot. (I am, at 32, an old maid.)

If the Fundamentalist Wiki is anything to go by, your high school peers are comparatively old when they get married. Some of the fundie family kids are still getting married at 19-20 even in this day and age.

AYRT and "the Fundamentalist Wiki" struck a fear into my heart I didn't know existed.

Yeah, it's a strange rabbit hole. However, I check up on it from time to time because it's the least horrifying way to keep tabs on that world (and what kind of pull it still has on people, at least in the US).

What is a Fundamentalist Wiki?

My parents got married at 20 and 24 and they're still together, and they're definitely not fundies.

Yeah, my ex's parents got engaged right out of high school and they're still happily married nearly 50 years later. It's not the age so much as it is whether you're ultimately compatible with each other long-term. (And I say this as someone who has dated and broken up with people in my 30s because it turned out that we were NOT compatible long-term despite being much older and more mature.)
