Your Diner Order

(Anonymous) 2023-04-29 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
When you go to a diner, what do you usually order?

(If you don't have diners where you are, or you don't go to diners, substitute with whatever you think the best equivalent is!)

Breakfast: Waffles (with chocolate chips if they are not $3 extra), breakfast potatoes or hashbrowns, and sausage links.

Lunch: Grilled chicken, potatoes, and whatever vegetable they recommend.

Dinner: French Dip or Patty Melt if I can, mac and cheese, a vegetable.

Dessert: Cheesecake if they got it or anything lemon.

This has nothing to do with anything, but you saying "a vegetable" reminded me that I wanted to make belly pork with veggies tomorrow, and I need to get the pork out of the freezer. Thanks for the reminder in a weird, roundabout way!

Forgot... gotta check the pie list and get a piece of pie for dessert. Lemon meringue if they've got it.

Lemon meringue is so good....AS LONG as they have fresh meringue. That is always the maker or breaker of lemon meringue. So many places have a meringue that tastes old and has horrible texture.

Oh, man, it's been too long since I've had good country fried steak with mashed potatoes and gravy. Delicious.

Breakfast: whatever the eggs + meat + potatoes + bread meal is, unless I want a carbload, in which case, pancakes.
Lunch: A sandwich, usually grilled cheese or a BLT with chips or fries and a soda, but sometimes something else if it looks good (always a Rachel if they have it.)
Dinner: If I'm feeling something light, the soup & salad, otherwise whatever looks good in the specials, or if there's no specials, usually either an open-faced sandwich or some kind of pasta dish.

What is a roast beef hot shot?

Re: Your Diner Order

(Anonymous) 2023-04-30 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
bread or toast (usually white bread, mashed nice and flat) + hot sliced meat + gravy in that order, usually with mashed potatoes or french fries, also covered in gravy, on the side.

It's the same as an open-faced sandwich & there's also other regional names, I think.

I usually end up going to diners for breakfast or brunch more than anything else, so omelette and homefries, with as much of that diner coffee as I can get.

I don't think I've ever thought of pineapple as a breakfast food!

Belgian waffle! It's hard to do wrong. And I'm always in the mood for breakfast.

Dinner spaghetti with marinara sauce. Onky two diners I've been two gave achieved both that ideal consistency and taste if diner spaghetti and actually good marinara sauce (two different experiences at two different diners). It's such a particular dish for me, I need to ve in the mood and it has to be done right. Aka shouldn't actually taste like true Italian food. Has to have that classic diner taste or solid Italian American grandma/mom flavor.

Source: not Italian, have spent time in Italy though, and have learned how to make pasta from Italian Italians. But sometimes I'm in the mood for that other stuff!

SA

Also, slice of pie for dessert. As many have mentioned.

So:
All times: Belgian waffle
Some lunch times: some kind of not too many meats sandwich
Some dinners: spaghetti with marinara sauce
But 9/10 I'm just getting Belgian waffle. With a side of eggs (fried/over medium, with toast).

We had diners some time ago, they were sort of fashionable. They all closed down. They are too expensive for this boring and sort of unhealthy kind of food here.
I remember having a great time in one with my friends. But I can't even vaguely recall what I was eating.
The closest thing I guess is the chain that specializes in local type of greasy food. I usually go for a lot of cheese options. Or for soups, I love soups but I hate cooking them. So I always go for soups

Lunch: a burger of some description w/ fries, or seafood chowder
Dinner: chicken parma w/ chips and salad, or market fish w/ chips and salad

i suppose the nearest uk equivalent is the caff (note: not the café), so probably most of a full english except for the black pudding because fuck black pudding

a full english is such that you can safely eat it for breakfast, lunch or dinner
