Do you read fics outside your fandom?

(Anonymous) 2023-04-29 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read an amazing Dragon Age fic and I am definitely not in the DA fandom. I had to look up some of the characters because I just didn't understand some references, but otherwise it was a good time. I'm not usually a "read random stuff" kind of ficcer but this one surprised me.

So curious, do you search by tags/plot and just read whatever or do you like to stick to your known fandoms?

Not anymore, but I'm a fandom old, and back before you could use the internet to watch TV I would read fic in fandoms to see if I wanted to go to the effort to watch whatever show/movie it was.

Occasionally I will. Sometimes because I'm just in the mood for a certain plot or setup. Sometimes because I'm trying to see if there are any fandoms out there that I might like. Sometimes because stuff will be recced that sounds good even though I'm not in the fandom so I'll pick it up and read it.

Sometimes if I am looking for a particular trope. These are usually AU so I don't need to know a ton of canon.

Yes if it crosses over with my fandom or if it is features a particular kink or plot feature that I'm looking for at that time.

One of my fav. fics to reread is a Supernatural fic. I've seen an ep and a half of Supernatural. Another is a Teen Wolf fic. I've never seen a second of that show. Quality is quality.

Sure. Sometimes that's how I find good fics.

I stick to my fandoms and have never searched by trope/plot/kink/etc, but if I really love an author's works in one or more of my fandoms, I may read at least some of their fics for fandoms I'm not in.

That's pretty much what I do. I'll also check out the Bookmarks of favorite/liked authors and will sometimes read fic for fandoms I'm not in that way. But generally I stick to my fandoms.

ALL THE TIME!

In fact, Dragon Age is one of those fandoms I end up reading just because I end up liking the stories (I'm not in the fandom or interacting with the actual media at all)!

Reading random fandoms tends to happen by tags (if I'm looking for something specific). I generally jump around my fandoms, but if a different fandom has a good offering based on what I'm in the mood for? And the execution is on the money? I'm in there like swimwear bb.

Only if I'm looking for like, very specific porn.

Sometimes, yeah. If there's a writer I like, I'll try their other stuff even if I'm not familiar with the source material.

Yep. My favorite trope is pretty hard to find, so I'll read whatever I can find with it, as long as it isn't a fandom I really dislike.

Rarely. My favorite fics usually heavily rely on canon. I don't usually ike AUs, I am never into fics for a trope etc
But I have read some not-my-fandom fics for comments exchange thing, they were interesting. Not going to do it outside this exchange though. Even if they are written by favorite author

Very rarely. Every once in a while I'll end up getting sucked into a particularly excellent fic for a pairing I only vaguely ship, in a fandom I'm not in--but hardly ever.

Usually the course of events is: consume story > become obsessed with ship > seek fanfic > sink deep into entrenched obsession for years.

Every now and then I do. Either from a recc or I am interested in a ship or something from a random thing.

I always feel like the fandoms I'm not in tend to have really good fics lol

Like, I went through a phase where I read some Star Wars fics, and it was the first fandom where I was like, "wow this fic is good" and then I find at least 3 more fics kind of like the first fic but also well written in its own way so it doesn't feel redundant or tedious.

Well I started reading AU supernatural fics without seeing the show - but eventually I ended up watching the show lol.

All the time! Sometimes I really want something new to read, especially when it comes to my kinks. So I’ll be on the lookout for any fic that scratches the itch, even if it’s for a fandom I’m unfamiliar with. I’ve gotten into many fandoms and works that way.

Also, I’ll sometimes just think someone in an unfamiliar work is hot, or seems cool and interesting, and I’ll look up the details and look into the fandom.
