As a commenter further up the thread, I really appreciate this.

Growing up in a mid-Atlantic state it's (personally) easy to knee-jerk divide the east coast into "more racist than us" and "more white than us".

So thanks for the reminder that there's some great diverse culture south of us that's worth appreciating.

I think the white people in Mississippi are probably more racist on the whole though.

You're kind of glossing over the fact that the diversity comes with a shit ton of racism from the white people who live there. Music doesn't make up for that, and I hadn't heard that Mississippi was a gourmet foodie mecca.

You may be underestimating the racism of white west virginians. Sure, the white Mississippians maybe be *slightly* more virulently racist, but you've got better odds of stumbling into a community that isn't 100% racist white people than in West Virginia.

Mississippi is a deep red state surrounded by deep red states. At least WV is surrounded by liberal states.

Ohio and Kentucky aren't progressive. And the parts of Virginia and Pennsylvania that are progressive are the parts that are farthest away from West Virginia.
