I kind of feel you on this, OP. I shipped entirely het for my first few years in fandom, but then when I finally did make the jump to slash, I basically never looked back. For over a decade all my OTPs were M/M and I'd started to think I may never have another M/F ship again. So when a het ship basically reached out and grabbed me by the throat a couple months ago, I was genuinely shocked at myself, like, "Wait, hang on, I thought we didn't do this anymore!"

Hah, I had the same thing happen with FFXIV now.

Twice.

And then, both times, half of the het ship died. :| THANKS GUYS.

AYRT - Oh man, I feel your pain. Half of my current OTP (not the het one but the slash one I've had for several years) also died, and it's the worst. Do I tell myself the character gets resurrected somehow? Yes. But it's not the same as them just BEING ALIVE STILL. You have my sympathies for having to go through that pain twice.

Eh, my most favorite OTP literally both die in canon, so I'm okay with character death - and I have written so much pre-canon fic about them, so it's not like it stops me! It's just super weird that TWICE in the same canon, I went "whoa am I actually shipping het? With interesting enough chemistry I might actually write smut for them?!" and then shortly after "...Well, darnit."

At least two of them were actually old friends so I could go the pre-canon route there. The other two barely met each other, snarked at each other constantly, started to reach an understanding... then death. There is not a lot I can do with that.

(Though FFXIV fandom in particular seems inclined to just carry on as if characters who canonically died are just still there without explanation... like I had no idea that certain characters died because there is so much fanstuff that includes them casually hanging around with everyone else. o_o)
