I am trying not to be judgmental here, but you're telling me that this anime gacha game is the first canon you've ever consumed where you thought the female characters were well-fleshed-out and interesting enough to ship?

It happens. Western romance rubbed me the wrong way all the time in practically everything, until I was in my late thirties or so.* I was amazed as a kid when I started reading manga and finding some of the straight relationships compelling.

*except for one classic novel that has very little in the way of predecessors or descendants. So thinking "where can I find more of this?" didn't get me very far.

If the OP hasn't had much contact with the wealth of different ways to be emotionally intimate in Asian media, I can see Genshin being a revelation. I prefer Japanese stories, but they're drawing from compatible ideas of what (else) romance can involve.

AYRT but just to be clear, I understand not liking het romance in canons! The same way I totally get how some people just prefer slash ships. It's specifically the idea that the root cause has to do with a lack of fleshed out female characters in all other non-Genshin canons that seems surprising.

This is so funny to me because i find a lot of the female GI characters much more lacking in their characterisation and reduced to their waifu-ness than most of the male characters.

second of all, gee wish I had your problembs, since I'm in GI and ship Lumine with some guys and get a lot of flack for it for "Reasons"
(pretty sure it just proves your point, I am so tired of this, can't I make my fav characters kiss in peace? /SIGH)

That sounds sucky. As far as I'm concerned, you should be able to ship anyone with anyone, guilt-free. And no one should be giving you guff about Lumine!

Two close friends of mine play Genshin and villain-ship. Which is enough to write dirty stories and role-play and have a good time without giving two fucks about what's supposedly "problematic" these days.

But watching the Reddit group for Dottore go temporarily Nuts Outrage Mode over the idea that some people were shipping Collei with him was ... I didn't know whether to laugh or roll my eyes. It's Thoughtcrime and The Pixels Are Underage are just such stupid, tired arguments.

Why is gen and slash okay to ship but not het? I get why people are resistant to certain ships but the way this secret is worded just isn't clicking with my brain. Maybe I'm just tired.

I think OP only meant it humorously, tbh. Slash is the common config for ships in fandoms too. But I get what you mean, I also have been noticing people have been weird about shipping m/f recently, it's kind of funny.

In the GI fandom, some het fans tend to be pretty annoying and insist they're some persecuted minority so that makes the lot of them kinda unpopular. The few ruining stuff for the many, once more. And that's not counting the outright homophobic people.

Nah, but I see where you're coming from. The slash ships in Genshin are my favorites, too.

Ah, if I were you I wouldn't worry about your identity because of this. It's not like Genshin can add characters you like to every other media you consume, so "I'm a slash fan" will keep covering 99% of what you like and want when you're dealing with people in any other fandom. And besides, you have every right to keep details of your personality to yourself if you want to.

I'm old enough to remember when people would try to claim you were committing some sort of sexual offense against canon by slashing characters at all, by shipping characters from a G-rated canon, by shipping characters who were canonically dating or married to someone else, et cetera. None of those arguments ever made the slightest impression on me. So now, if the Wheel of What's Forbidden in your particular friends group has rolled around to Thou Shalt Not Het Ship ... I don't think you have to care. It's just fandom wank, and always was.

I kind of feel you on this, OP. I shipped entirely het for my first few years in fandom, but then when I finally did make the jump to slash, I basically never looked back. For over a decade all my OTPs were M/M and I'd started to think I may never have another M/F ship again. So when a het ship basically reached out and grabbed me by the throat a couple months ago, I was genuinely shocked at myself, like, "Wait, hang on, I thought we didn't do this anymore!"

Don't listen to the haters anon. Whatever works for you. It's fine to like any character, and any type of dynamic, and if there is something specifically about the female Genshin characters that worked for you, then there's nothing wrong with enjoying it.
My first het ship was... Made in Abyss. I realised I can only ship het if the male character is extremely overpowered by the female one. A lot of people would judge me for liking something so porny and problematic, but so what. I'm having my fun in my little corner of the internet.
