What? You don't like hearing her songs in pharmaceutical ads?

I’m curious why it angers you? I feel like there is some obvious unspoken part of this secret but that I don’t know enough about her to know what it is.

Not OP (and I'm guessing "physical anger" is hyperbole on OP's part) but it is a little annoying to hear something you might have connected with in the past now used as a stupid product jingle. It just feels... disrespectful, somehow.

AYRT I can understand that. I have felt a much milder annoyance about some music that I’ve heard used that way but it’s lucrative for artists (or their copyright holders) to agree to that stuff. Music just doesn’t pay the way people seem to think it does.

Well for one, she was kinda low-key a communist.

She licensed her music for commercial use in her lifetime though.

I have a feeling she wouldn't be real thrilled either.

What do you care if it hopefully benefits her relatives financially?

It's not always accurate to assume that the rights to an artist's music is owned by their families after death, though. Depending on how savvy and financially well off the artist was during their lifetime, they might not control their own music, and their loved ones might not, either.

So much this.

DA
I’d read before an earlier comment that the rights are owned by her trust. I checked now and they are but her family aren’t involved in the trust anymore; she didn’t own the rights to her music and there was over a decade of legal wrangling about it. In the end, the guy she’d sold a lot of the rights to (her old lawyer) ended up taking over the trust and buying out the other rights holder (Sony Music). So that guy is the one benefiting from her music’s usage in commercials. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is why op gets so angry and also wouldn’t be surprised if he got the initial rights by either pressuring or tricking her.

Your secret inspired me to go look up Nina Simone and I just spent a good time reading her Wiki page. She lived an interesting (and troubled) life. I knew her popular tunes but nothing about her, so that was interesting. Thank you.

I was waiting for my lunch the other day and the cafe was playing "Mississippi Goddam" which is a fucking amazing song and starts out pretty jaunty to lure you in, but definitely not what I want to hear while waiting for my sandwich to be toasted.

Unless they were playing a Starbucks-friendly edit, I’m pretty sure that this is the exact opposite of OP’s problem.
