What do you care if it hopefully benefits her relatives financially?

It's not always accurate to assume that the rights to an artist's music is owned by their families after death, though. Depending on how savvy and financially well off the artist was during their lifetime, they might not control their own music, and their loved ones might not, either.

I’d read before an earlier comment that the rights are owned by her trust. I checked now and they are but her family aren’t involved in the trust anymore; she didn’t own the rights to her music and there was over a decade of legal wrangling about it. In the end, the guy she’d sold a lot of the rights to (her old lawyer) ended up taking over the trust and buying out the other rights holder (Sony Music). So that guy is the one benefiting from her music’s usage in commercials. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is why op gets so angry and also wouldn’t be surprised if he got the initial rights by either pressuring or tricking her.
