They're not. They speaking for the general consensus of fandom. We're here to get AWAY from capitalism. Don't bring that shit here. Go make your own place.

... Honestly, isn't it a bit too late for that, considering fandom is inherently capitalistic (I assume you don't get into the theater for free)?

Fandom is not inherently capitalistic.

A) I don't actually have to have seen/read the source material to participate in fandom.

B) Most people can get the source material for free either through their library, borrowing from friends, by flying the flag, or many other means.

C) Participating in fandom is free - I don't have to pay fan artists, I don't have to pay fanfic authors, I don't have to pay money to access tumblr, I don't have to pay money to access discord, I don't have to pay money to access AO3. I can have discussions and post art and compilations and meta all for free.

The only barrier to participating in fandom is access to the internet. Unlike the capitalistic hellscape outside my door, I don't have to spend money to send time in fandom.

AYRT - Okay, I don't disagree. But it's been more capitalistic than ever for sure. Feel free to try to blame some small fish charging for art comissions for that but Netflix said "sharing is caring" only to say "on second thought, no" some years later.

It HAS been more capitalistic than ever, which is why there's such a pushback against people acting in a capitalistic manner, bemoaning or demanding payment (i.e. engagement) for their fandom contribution, especially on AO3 - an explicitly anti-capitalistic organization.

AYRT - But here is the thing: that's because you assume everyone who wants recognition is doing it for the "engagement" or finantial return, ie. capitalistic reasons. And my point was exactly that, no, part of the fun in creating art (for me and many others I assume) is to receive feedback from "that's just what I wanted to see!" to realizing others saw things in it you yourself didn't. It IS part of the fun for many I believe. IMO it's just natural to want recognition for your creations as an artist - to feel valued in your work whatever your work is too, not just "artists".

The way some people now assume this means "wanting to be finantially retributed" says a lot more about the state of the world and capitalism than the intentions of whoever wants to feel recognized and may not be guilty about this state of the world in the slightest and just wants to feel that basic human level of acknowledgement.

No? I mean, yeah, it's part of the whole "fandom" thing that you're taking part in a community and a conversation. And I've yet to see ANY fanwork on AO3 that doesn't have some recognition and engagement.

The issue is that getting recognition or engagement from people who WANT to have that conversation with you isn't enough for the people we're talking about. They want MORE and they think they deserve it because they "worked" (no longer a hobby, then) and often times it can only be a certain type of conversation (how awesome they are). The OP said it themselves, the "artists feel exploited". How do you feel exploited voluntarily doing a hobby unless you feel like you are owed something for doing it that you're not getting?

I'm the anon who was commenting before, and walked away from the conversation when the anon I was talking with told me to "stop doing" something I never did.

I wanted to comment on your post because it seems entirely on target to me.
