(Anonymous) 2023-05-08 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)A) I don't actually have to have seen/read the source material to participate in fandom.
B) Most people can get the source material for free either through their library, borrowing from friends, by flying the flag, or many other means.
C) Participating in fandom is free - I don't have to pay fan artists, I don't have to pay fanfic authors, I don't have to pay money to access tumblr, I don't have to pay money to access discord, I don't have to pay money to access AO3. I can have discussions and post art and compilations and meta all for free.
The only barrier to participating in fandom is access to the internet. Unlike the capitalistic hellscape outside my door, I don't have to spend money to send time in fandom.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-09 01:33 am (UTC)(link)The way some people now assume this means "wanting to be finantially retributed" says a lot more about the state of the world and capitalism than the intentions of whoever wants to feel recognized and may not be guilty about this state of the world in the slightest and just wants to feel that basic human level of acknowledgement.
Re: DA
(Anonymous) 2023-05-09 03:25 am (UTC)(link)The issue is that getting recognition or engagement from people who WANT to have that conversation with you isn't enough for the people we're talking about. They want MORE and they think they deserve it because they "worked" (no longer a hobby, then) and often times it can only be a certain type of conversation (how awesome they are). The OP said it themselves, the "artists feel exploited". How do you feel exploited voluntarily doing a hobby unless you feel like you are owed something for doing it that you're not getting?
