So the other day I was cruising a Walmart and found and flipped through some Cassandra Claire books (my sister likes them idk) . And I was seized with a desire to just take up a dumb flowery pen name and just write shameless self indulgence and wish fulfilmenty things.

Publish them on KDP or something and just write something mediocre or like embarrassing but fun for the fun of it and see where it goes

It's not like I'll throw a hissy fit if they're not liked . I mean that's the whole point of taking up a pen name that I can detach myself from . I honestly just want to write them to write and recapture the joy of 12 year old me when I was writing my ridiculous self insert stuff

Absolutely not. You should do it! It seems like a lot of fun and who knows, could bring you in a solid income.

Nah. You should have fun with it, otherwise what's the point? That way the worst case scenario is you spent some time having frivolous fun. Best case scenario, your wish fulfillment fic scratches other peoples' itches and BAM, income stream.

That would be amazing. I also plan on using a penname with no attachment to my real-er penname. I've always been good at just creating a throwaway persona or mask when needed because I've been masking socially for so long lol.

My friend and I were just having a very similar conversation. Like why the heck not? Just write what's fun and capture that joy we used to have and hey, maybe other people might like it too! I get so paralyzed by my writing having to fit some kind of form that I don't even start writing anything anymore, it all just stays in my head.

I definitely don't think it would make you a lesser writer, but then I'm a firm believer in "a writer" being the only title, there is no higher or lower artform - if you write a book you're a writer and that's more than a lot of people ever do in their lifetime.

I hate Cassie Clare - I was around when she was a little shit in fandom and I've held onto that grudge - but I gotta give her credit for writing what the people want and making a career out of it. Do I want to read it? No. But that doesn't make it lesser, it just makes it for a different crowd.

tbh I knew of her just being a bnf and then I heard everything she did and felt like I shouldn't read her books. Of course I kept it to myself and I didn't ruin it for my sister . If she gets something out of it great. She's never really been active in the fanscene beyond briefly cowriting and beta-ing something I wrote when we were teenagers. She would occasionally search stuff in my little fandom and print it out for me. I always found it kinda sweet how she was about my hobby even when we didn't always get along.

I have a lot of anxiety about people accepting my work personally as well. Especially with a history of some bullying inside and outside fandom. Honestly something about writing for myself or just writing for my partner helped and became calming . It helped me rediscover my enjoyment of writing for its own purpose and it comes easier to me now to write. It's like therapy in a way.

Nah do it! Goodness knows there's people who write worse stuff out there with twice the confidence. Go make your 12 year old self's dreams come true!

heh sounds fun. TBH I wouldn't be that fussed by people saying they hated it if I had fun writing it and I feel like feeling like that is a good thing for my mental health. Especially since I've been recovering from being (in the words of a dear friend) a major doormat, and had the ADHD issue where even an inkling of someone disliking me makes me wanna curl up and cry.

The only thing that would make you a bad writer is writing badly. Doesn't matter what you do with that writing - only one person needs to enjoy it, and that person is you.

tbh I feel like some of what is said to be writing badly is.. kind of based on commercialism and what people think sells so... eh I dunno. Maybe it's controversial but I have complicated feelings on what is "bad writing"

But I agree on the last bit. If I enjoy it, no time is wasted.

I think a freedom in writing self indulgent stuff is the lack of expectation. You're just doing what you want and you're not harming anyone or doing anything out of line, just enjoy yourself.

I think what matters most is what you want and it sounds like you just want to have fun and do something that is fun for you, and that sounds great!

Yeah tbh. Like I said to someone else .. I'm kinda starting to have mixed feelings about views of badwriting and how based it is on an assumption of profit and others enjoyment. And honestly yeah writing for me is so calming and therapeutic. and I can tell myself I'm literally not effecting ANYONE else.

Thanks yeah I kinda want to . And honestly maybe its not popular with some but.. I'd love to write a thing that wallows a bit in the setting and descriptions of a world.

welp I'm convinced! I might just start working on this. Now , to find a good penname , and start throwing back some soda as the ideas brew.
