How it should have gone - fix-its

(Anonymous) 2023-05-13 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Inspired by secrets 1 and 7 -

For a show that was cancelled too early or a plot you think is shit, how would you have preferred it to go? Do you imagine just a total rewrite or a fix it?

For the 90s American Gothic, I’d love to see a continuation with a whole new cast. The devil could be manifesting as someone else (I’d still keep them the sheriff though) and instead of trying to reclaim his son we can see them manoeuvring to have another child to replace those he lost. We’d learn that Caleb killed himself but it looked like an accident to the whole town. All the central characters have moved on in some way but the devils target learns about all the word stuff that had gone down by old timers who love to gossip the day away. Do the first season as set around ten years ago ending with the child being born and then season two as present day with the kid being around ten and the devil starting the cycle over of trying to claim their child.

…not that I’ve ever given this any kind of thought *g*

Game of Thrones would have at least one or two seasons more to make Daenerys going evil believable. Also, someone else ends up on the throne. Anyone but Bran really, but preferably a female character.

How I Met Your Mother. Final episode doesn't happen. Best ideal would be Ted gets over Robin earlier. But at least that final episode doesn't happen, Ted is finally over Robin and meets the mother. And Barney and Robin stay married. Without kids.

Criminal Minds season 15 doesn't happen. It skips right from 14 to 16.

Supernatural stops with season 5. Except either both brothers are in hell or dead or both survive.

Doctor Who, 13's run stays a lot the same except the storyline that changes Time Lord origins and makes the Doctor the first Time Lord is gone. Also, Galifrey isn't re-destroyed.

For recent seasons of Doctor Who - I still maintain that my theory where Susan was the Timeless Child and the Fugitive Doctor removed that from her own memory before disguising herself as (but not regenerating into) 1 would have been a way better version of TTC. Also 13 should have either pressed the button or refused to press the button to wipe all life from Gallifrey, the Cybermen should have just taken over the Capitol and driven all non-Time Lord Gallifreyans into hiding, the Flux should have been about an alien refugee crisis and tied into the whole Zygon situation, and Tennant Mark 2 should have been the Valeyard.

The Doctor should have found some way to save Donna from what happened to her. It was such a shitty ending for such an amazing person. Even if she couldn't travel anymore, she should have been able to keep her memories.

Steve Rogers should have died fighting Thanos. Especially since despite killing Tony he still lingers around in later movies.

I don't know what should have happened in Supernatural. But it wasn't the finale.

Self Indulgence in Writing

(Anonymous) 2023-05-13 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
So the other day I was cruising a Walmart and found and flipped through some Cassandra Claire books (my sister likes them idk) . And I was seized with a desire to just take up a dumb flowery pen name and just write shameless self indulgence and wish fulfilmenty things.

Publish them on KDP or something and just write something mediocre or like embarrassing but fun for the fun of it and see where it goes

It's not like I'll throw a hissy fit if they're not liked . I mean that's the whole point of taking up a pen name that I can detach myself from . I honestly just want to write them to write and recapture the joy of 12 year old me when I was writing my ridiculous self insert stuff

Would they make me a bad or idk lesser writer?

Would they make me a bad or idk lesser writer?

Absolutely not. You should do it! It seems like a lot of fun and who knows, could bring you in a solid income.

Nah. You should have fun with it, otherwise what's the point? That way the worst case scenario is you spent some time having frivolous fun. Best case scenario, your wish fulfillment fic scratches other peoples' itches and BAM, income stream.

My friend and I were just having a very similar conversation. Like why the heck not? Just write what's fun and capture that joy we used to have and hey, maybe other people might like it too! I get so paralyzed by my writing having to fit some kind of form that I don't even start writing anything anymore, it all just stays in my head.

I definitely don't think it would make you a lesser writer, but then I'm a firm believer in "a writer" being the only title, there is no higher or lower artform - if you write a book you're a writer and that's more than a lot of people ever do in their lifetime.

I hate Cassie Clare - I was around when she was a little shit in fandom and I've held onto that grudge - but I gotta give her credit for writing what the people want and making a career out of it. Do I want to read it? No. But that doesn't make it lesser, it just makes it for a different crowd.

Nah do it! Goodness knows there's people who write worse stuff out there with twice the confidence. Go make your 12 year old self's dreams come true!

The only thing that would make you a bad writer is writing badly. Doesn't matter what you do with that writing - only one person needs to enjoy it, and that person is you.

I think a freedom in writing self indulgent stuff is the lack of expectation. You're just doing what you want and you're not harming anyone or doing anything out of line, just enjoy yourself.

I think what matters most is what you want and it sounds like you just want to have fun and do something that is fun for you, and that sounds great!

Thanks for the support guys!

Old hobbies you want to get back into

(Anonymous) 2023-05-13 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I just realized how long it's been since I've done some real hiking and/or camping and it makes me sad. I stopped because my dog was my adventure buddy but she's old and can't go, so I just....didn't go either. The idea of going out without her and leaving her at home makes me really emotional, but I also really miss being active and hiking.

Baking! I have so much baking but never do it much. Though, I made an amazing cheesecake a couple months ago.

ANything physical. But a chronic illness will do that to a person.
Anything crafty. Ditto. Shaking hands and not being able to sit up for long ditto.
Writing. The pandemic and having to keep an elderly, fragile relative and myself alive and safe took the last of my energy and destroyed the last if my health. Writing is hard, ergo, no more writing.

I dabbled in watercolor painting and text-based art in GIMP over the last year and a half. Time on a city advisory board has left less time for those hobbies, and I rather miss them.

I'll echo the baking thing.

I was so into baking. And I believe had I kept baking and honing my craft I'd be a pretty good baker by now.

Depression and moving into a place with a small, badly designed kitchen really demotivated me in the past 5-ish years. I've been thinking about baking chocolate chip cookies for months, but just thinking about the work that goes into making the cookies and cleaning the kitchen makes my brain tired.

I do want to bake again though. Cooking and baking can be really therapeutic but I feel like I need a change of environment.

Archery. Stopped doing it in pandemic (I have nowhere to shoot so I need professional place) now I am to anxious to return.
Reading. I stopped reading at one point and just... can't.

Writing. I considered myself a writer more than an artist/painter for the longest time until I noticed I almost exclusively draw/paint and never really write anymore. But I have no interest in writing in my native language and am too self-conscious to write anything other than shortfic in English.

AO3 is racist?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-13 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Apart from the usual "AO3 is bad" stuff that goes around, now there's a movement to end racism on AO3. I feel like their goals are too lofty but I could be way off base. I don't think people should be writing thinly disguised fic about the killing of real people, but I also don't think people should be writing fic about eight year olds fucking. I just don't know how the archive would be able to police one but not the other.

I kind of expected someone on here to be talking about it, but I haven't seen a thread, so here's one.

New Star Wars Podcast about old books!

[personal profile] deleted_scenes 2023-05-14 07:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a new podcast called The Star Wars Old Canon Book Club where 3 SW fans go through all the old books and comics chronologically. There are only two episodes right now but their old podcast (Star Wars New Canon Book Club) disillusioned them to SW after TROS so it's nice to see their enthusiasm back.

Be sure to listen for the overuse of the words "tite" and "hype"!
