For your questions, because I have one.

Weather headaches

[personal profile] philstar22 2023-05-16 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone else get bad headaches when the air pressure drops? What do you find works for you for those headaches? My usual headache treatments (tilenol, heat or ice) don't work as well for the really bad weather headaches.

Even with a heating pad on my head and after taking tilenol an hour ago, it still hurts so bad my teeth hurt.

Drink cold water and try to hold it in your mouth briefly to numb the nerves in your gums. Hopefully it'll send numbness up through the nerves into your face/head/

Stretch your jaw! It relieves pressure. There's actually a specific stretch but I can't think of it now. But yeah, I get those and they are awful.

The only thing that really helps me is using a steroid nasal spray all the time so that my sinuses don't get so bad that the headaches are crushing. But other things that can help are all the things you do for ear pain on take-off and landing in a plane - chew gum or suck hard candy, heatpack on the face, val salva maneuver (gently!), jaw stretches.

Yeah, one of my main migraine triggers is weather changes. I've basically resigned myself to the fact that if I wake up with a headache due to the weather, I could pop ten pills and it doesn't work. It sucks.

I get that too. I’ll try to drink cold water and stretch my jaw like the other anons suggest.

Whoops! I put this response in the wrong place.

Solovairs

(Anonymous) 2023-05-16 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone own a pair? How has it been and how long have you owned them? How often and I'm what weather conditions do you use them?

I think after many, many, many a year, I'm giving in and buying a pair of combat boots. I was looking at doc martens but the quality isn't the same, I've heard. Looking to hear some opinions! It's a costly boot and I'd like to have it for at least 10 years.

Re: Solovairs

(Anonymous) 2023-05-16 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Don't know about Solovairs but it's true about Doc Martens not being as good anymore. I have two pairs over 20 years old still going and a 5-year-old pair that are pretty much wrecked.

Re: Solovairs

(Anonymous) 2023-05-16 03:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I've had mine for 10 years now. They're holding up great. I live in England so they've got me through a lot of rain and mud. Wear them all the time really as once broken in they're comfortable. They have better leather than Doc's.

Honestly, they're as good as my over 40 year old pair of Docs that are only just showing their age. They're the same company that made my old docs and one thing I love is they (unlike new Doc's) still have soles that can be replaced. For some reason Doc's stopped doing that on their newer boots. Thing's like that mean your boot's will last ages. newer Doc's I find just fall apart on the soles.

Thank you!! I really wear the crap out of my boots in general so I'm looking for a pair that can take (somewhat) of a beating. I live in the Northeastern US, so we get rain and snow. Only after 15 years of no care (and hiking through snow, and rain, and casual wear, etc) are my biker boots finally giving out, so this might be a worthwhile replacement. I like that the soles can be replaced. Welp, time to spend some money :'/ lol

Perfumes/Scents

(Anonymous) 2023-05-16 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm in the process of changing scents. I kind of really like the scents I wear now, but I'm trying to see what smells good on me and what I actually like. And hopefully find the middle. (I also want to try more "masculine" scents but I just can't drop the citrusy florals!).

Any suggestions on how you find it and if you blend two scents together? Thanks!

It's been a long time but back in the day, I placed an order at surrendertochance. It's a revolting service where you can order small sample sizes of perfumes you're interested in but can't find samples for/can't easily find in stores to sample them. To search for new scents that might fit your profile, you could check sites like parfumo where you can read reviews for a lot of perfumes and filter by notes you want.
In general, to get more "masculine" scents you can look for perfumes that have wood, incense or leather in their notes.

Thanks! I'll take a look at those. And I'll take revolting as a typo? Lol

Demeter is really good-- they have some blending sets, I know, but you can also get little samples of their single note scents just based on what you like or think might work, and then layer them.

I also had a really nice masculine floral from Black Phoenix Alchemy Lab, some years ago, but I do not remember it-- still, they're worth a look, they also sell little sample size vials and they have various scents for different points along the gender presentation spectrum.

Sucrabeille I would say is largely femme scents, but the masc-leaning scents I've gotten there have been delicious! They rotate what is and isn't retired, but their Driver Picks the Music, Shotgun Shuts His Cakehole scent from the SPN collection is like... just genuinely a good masc scent that has some bright fruity notes! Not a floral, granted, but still.

AYRT

Omg Dean SPN SCENTS!!! I'm going to check all these out, thank you so much! I'm currently trying out a neroli based scent and I'm not entirely sure how I feel. it's kind of soft and nostalgic... but it's also clearly the base for a few colognes I've been smelling lately. So that's kind of eh. I like the idea of the blending sets!

I'm always just looking for a scent that feels like me, you know the feeling?

Anon from above and I really second Demeter. They have some lovely scents, are quite affordable and just looking at them, their novelty scents (like Pizza) sound hilarious. I wouldn't buy those but hey, it's fun.

A lot of perfume sites will let you buy samples. Luckyscent is one I've used. BPAL offers samples too and tends to be a favorite with fandom-ish people, but I think their actual perfumes are overrated. YMMV.

There are a lot of interesting masc and unisex scents available these days, including some with significant florals. Lavender, lilac, geranium, jasmine, and rose are notes that crop up often. I don't have specific recommendations because I personally don't seek out florals, but if you poke around some online sites you'll probably see some things that appeal. And citrus is in almost every "masculine" scent.

Have fun! It can be an expensive hobby but I love trying new scents.

Kinda related to 6-

How would you go about adjusting puzzle difficulty in an old-school point and click adventure?

Re: Questions

(Anonymous) 2023-05-16 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Uhh, some games has difficulty settings then (Monkey Island 3 comes to mind … )

Re: Questions

(Anonymous) 2023-05-16 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Lower difficulty -> more clues

Re: Questions

(Anonymous) 2023-05-16 03:02 am (UTC)(link)
It really depends on the type of puzzle you're talking about, I think?

More or less power-ups available

Walkthroughs available (or not) for certain parts

Ability to skip puzzles or not
