Thanks to the Perfume anons
(Anonymous) 2023-05-17 01:50 am (UTC)(link)Late addition to yesterday's perfume thread.
(Anonymous) 2023-05-17 06:01 am (UTC)(link)As people in that thread said, sampling is very worthwhile, and if you live in the US it can even be reasonably affordable. (I live in Canada and it's generally pricier here, but still worthwhile for getting to know what you like.) Everywhere I buy samples from is Canadian, and probably not the best option for you unless you’re also Canadian, but I’m pretty sure r/fragrance has a page with a list of legit places to buy samples.
You also have the option of buying "decants" if you want, which usually means 5–10ml spray vials of a particular fragrance. Bigger than a sample but much smaller than a full bottle. These are particularly great if you are lusting after a very expensive fragrance, because buying a decant will allow you to use the fragrance enough times to know whether you really love it, or whether it was just a temporary infatuation.
Fragrantica is a good website for looking up the notes and accords of different fragrances, so what you could do is use Fragrantica to help you choose which samples you want to buy. Don’t expect to know what a fragrance is going to be like from looking at the notes, though. There are so many different ways for notes to combine that it’s very hard to know until you actually smell it. But looking at the notes and the accords can at least help you get an overall sense of the general type of fragrances it is. I believe Basenotes is another website you can use for this purpose, though I don't know Basenotes very well.
Another tip is that, when it comes to buying full bottles, it is completely unnecessary to pay retail price most of the time (with the exception of the occasional brand that you can rarely find at a discount). Fragrancebuy, Perfumeonline, and Fragrancenet are all excellent “gray market” sellers. The former two are Canadian, but they’re so good that a lot of American’s also opt to use them over other US options. They’re very reputable, but they don’t have any brick and mortar stores, which is one of the ways that they keep their prices well below standard retail. Most people who do fragrance as a hobby buy from them. Aura Fragrance often seems to have the lowest prices of all, and I’ve seen people say they’re legit also, but they don’t ship to Canada so I can’t personally vouch for them.
General venting.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-17 04:36 am (UTC)(link)I'm definitely in the "try to ignore malfunctioning things as long as possible" crowd... but a malfunctioning fridge is almost impossible for me to ignore. (Full disclosure: I did once try... and gave myself awful food poisoning.)
In my experience, the whole ordeal sucks and I'm really sorry you'll have to suffer through it.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-17 10:28 am (UTC)(link)Getting on soapbox to say I don't know if it's intentional but these shitty designs for appliances are majority the cause of calling a mechanic to come look at it.
The moisture/freezing motor thing went on every few months for a couple years before we finally got a much more expensive fridge. Because the people I live with are oblivious and forgetful I honestly feel this fridge is a couple years away from gaining the same issue.
Pay attention to bags, food, various objects getting caught/trapped the fridge doors close. Bad sealing is how moisture enters the ventilation system.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-17 05:34 am (UTC)(link)One of my uncles only made it to 47, one of my grandmothers to 53, my dad to 60 and my mom to 66, and I'm almost 40, and every time something new breaks I wonder if I'll die before my house becomes completely uninhabitable, or after. I can't afford to move, but I also can't afford to fix anything and don't have the skills to do it myself.
... I suppose if I wanted to tip the scales even more in favor of dying early, I could try to remove the asbestos ceiling or fix the faulty wiring, rotting roof, or wonky gas lines myself, heh.

Re: Random Thoughts
(Anonymous) 2023-05-17 06:48 am (UTC)(link)Like, I see when others are feeling insecure and wanting to have "their" moment.
So I give it to them.
But there are times where I feel like I deserve to have "my" moment.
If there is someone there with me I often feel like I have to share my moment or downplay it.
And I get it can be because the person I am with is feeling insecure and they want what I have...
Why do I feel like shit when I share my moment/downplay it?
If I don't place importance on how the other person feels and just try to soak up the glory/attention, I often have to deal with someone being distant or even hostile afterwards.
Like, I think the problem is me, right? I should just stop caring so much that someone can't be fully happy for me when I have my moment and I should just deal with the after effects of having my moment while coping with a person/people who might be projecting their stuff onto mine.
I just wish it wasn't such a fucking pain in my ass to feel all these feelings.
And yeah, I'm currently not sharing my wins/proud moments too much. Mostly as a way protect myself from feeling hurt or guilty with how others might react.

(Anonymous) 2023-05-17 06:56 am (UTC)(link)I think I also feel resentment. On the other side of this is me often feeling like when others share their wins or having "their" moment, I try my best to be happy for them and celebrate them. Make it about them and don't overdo it (unless I know that's what they want lol)...
But on the flipside of that, those that I support and celebrate tend to not reciprocate. Or it feels lacking.
Again, it's me being insecure and projecting right?
I don't know how to get over these feelings.
I am genuinely happy for my friends and family when they want to celebrate.
It's on me to figure out why I feel like others' reactions to me having my moments suck ass and hurt me more than make me feel good.
