I do love a good old fashion vampires AU.
The last AU I wrote was a Teachers AU, where I had written my ship as rival teachers in classrooms next to each other.

I love high school AUs.

Honest question, but why? Curious because I loathe them so I'd love to hear the appeal from someone who enjoys them!

For me personally, it’s sorta like wish fulfillment. I didn’t have the best high school experience, but reading about my favorite characters having their slice of life moments and romantic confessions in an idealized high school setting makes me happy.

DA - I get this impulse but for me it takes root much more with college AUs not high school ones

NA
For me, part of it is the freedom of responsibility. In college, people are already young adults and when the characters engage in too much shenanigans it takes me out of the story. But at high school age, the characters can get caught up in all matters of drama or nonsense and it's fine, since they're teenagers anyway.

Also, for me personally, I'm not from the US. The college experience is somewhat similar to what I experienced in my own life, but high school in the US is pretty different from how it works here. So HS AUs are also just interesting to me for cultural reasons.

Hm. I think I look it at the same way but with a different interpretation - for me the it feels like high school is sort of pointless and meaningless and a waste of time. You have to spend all of your time caring about stuff that doesn't matter at all, and you and everyone around you are high school-aged teenagers, which means you're just by definition extremely dumb a very large percentage of the time. The fact that you have more ability to sort out your own life in college makes it much more interesting to me.

Magical/fantasy AU of real life set fandoms. Other than that, mostly the AUs I like are where one thing in canon is changed and see how that affects things. Like, when I was in Potter, what if Sirius didn't end up in Azkaban and raised Harry. Or for Star Wars, what if Luke and Leia were raised in the opposite place.

I love mob/mafia AUs.

The AUs I like are always canon based. But I do love werewolves and general magical/fantasy/scifi AUs.

I looooooooove arranged marriage AUs

Royalty AUs can be quite good but I only generally like them if they're on the cynical side

Usually canon style or parody of canon.

E.g.: Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex by Larry Niven.

I love canon universe mashups.

Everyone has Daemons? Love it. I'll never get enough. Please hyper link what the daemons look like.

Jedis? Count me in. I don't even like Star Wars that much but put my favs in space and give some of them the Force and I'm happy.

Wizarding World? Count me in if -and only IF- adult characters aren't aged down to go to magic middle school because I'm done with school AUs.

Westeros? Fuck me up let's do this.

Golarion? Faerun? Discworld? AtLA? Middle Earth? I'm here. for. it!

And then the generic ones: Regency-ish AUs, post apocalypse AUs, wild west AUs, Mythology AUs, Medieval AUs, Prohibition AUs, I'm noticing a trend here. I like everything except modern day AUs. Huh.

Space Opera is always a good time. Give me rayguns *and* swords, ancient decaying space stations, politics reminiscent of the Napoleon era, spaceships... definitely fun.

Surprised some of my faves haven't come up...

Love me a Coffee Shop/Bakery AU. So cosy!

Even though so much of it is trash, I also can't quit A/B/O. Though I think one of the main reasons I love it is because I love fated/forced romance - I also love Soul Mate AUs, especially ones where the name or a symbol of a person's soulmate appears on their body. I also am a fan of Arranged Marriage AUs. And would we call Hanahaki an AU subgenre? If so, I've been enjoying that lately as well.

I've grown fond of Fantasy/Dragonborn AUs, though I wouldn't necessarily seek them out.

Other than that, I mostly read Modern AUs ie the removal of the fantasy or sci fi or superhero elements of the canon, or the 'normalisation' of the characters jobs/lives.

High School AUs are a bit too young for me, but I don't mind a College AU if I'm in the mood (especially if the canon characters are high school aged).

I love me some ABO or soulmate AUs. For the fated lover aspect, which I dig, but also because I love the "everything is set in canon except that one thing is different" AUs. Gender bending also falls into that category for me, or role reversal AUs.

It took me a while to get into hanahaki but now I dig it as well.

I always think it's funny when people think work at a bakery is cosy. Like... you gotta wake up and get into work at 2 am, there's nothing cozy about that.
I know, I know, it's all the cutesy fantasy stuff that doesn't try or want to be realistic but it's still funny to me.

AYRT

I know, I know, I just love the fantasy of my OTP making bread or like, croissants together in cute aprons and feeding each other bits of pastry and playfully getting flour on each other's noses...

If it makes you feel better, I worked front of house in a cafe for about a year and it was so stressful that I couldn't smell espresso coffee for several months without full body cringing. And yet I still love Coffee Shop AUs, because I want my faves to live that fantasy life where all the regulars are friendly and there's never too much to do so there's always time to chat or make a free coffee or eat a free sandwich and yet they never have money problems and life is beautiful...

My favorites are Canon Divergence that genuinely diverges, Space Opera, Planetary Romance, and professional AUs.

Anything involving royalty for me. I just want my faves to wear crowns and have swords and be dramatic because the stakes are inherently high when you're a crown prince who's fallen in love with a kitchen boy.

I love reading Soulmate AU and Time Travel where one time travels to the past before they're together or where their child time travels to the past where they're not together yet.
