This is something that I've been seeing a lot. I can't tell if it's become more common over the years, or more pernicious, since I don't have any data. But it seems to me that hand in hand with the purity culture bullshit has come this idea that your likes and dislikes are objective, and so if you have a dislike you have to come up with (even make up) reasons for why something is bad. For some reason, there's a large percentage of people who have a hard time with just saying, "Eh, not my jam."

I did this for Divinity Original Sins for my second playthrough. Mainly because -while the turn based fighting system was interesting, it took so, so ridiculously long to get through a single fight.

This is me with Haruhi Suzumiya. The fetish porn is crazy good, but I sincerely doubt the canon characters would have personalities this suited to porn. If I read the original, the porn would probably be ruined forever for me.

(I made a secret about this once, but somehow multiple commenters got it backwards and thought I was saying the porn ruined the original for me.)

Purity culture is a big part of it but in fairness, this didn't start with purity culture. Way before then, there was still pressure to have an objective, explainable reason for not liking things. "It's just not for me" would get you endlessly asked "but why?" "I just don't like it" would be accused of being a childish attitude, and you'd get the same results of people criticizing something for elements that were also present in things they liked. (The number of times shonen manga fans shat on their hated series as evil for having fanservice and sexism when lol, their favorite series had those too but at best it was a tolerable flaw and at worst they bent through hoops to pretend it was subversive and they female characters were treated awesomely.)

Might depend on the fandom then, because I've rarely run into this until relatively recently. My fandom experience until about 5-10 years ago has been the kinktomato and sals and squick.

Nah people are just like this, you notice it more now because you can see so many people's opinions on something. Truly: no human is an objective giver of unbiased ideas, we all have our biases that form our opinions on how we like/dislike things, and that's not to say that's bad. Because it isn't. It's just how humans are, that's all.
