This is me with Haruhi Suzumiya. The fetish porn is crazy good, but I sincerely doubt the canon characters would have personalities this suited to porn. If I read the original, the porn would probably be ruined forever for me.

(I made a secret about this once, but somehow multiple commenters got it backwards and thought I was saying the porn ruined the original for me.)

Yeah, I don't see anything wrong with being in a fandom for the fanon. I was into Supernatural fandom for years after I stopped watching the actual show.

SPOILERS IN THIS COMMENT

I read a bunch of MHA fic after only getting through like a season of the anime. Have finished what's aired of the anime at this point but haven't watched the movies or read the manga and don't intend to.

My read on the fandom:

A lot of the really big fics were written before the war arc so don't take that into account anyway. As a result it's a mishmash of different fan interpretations at different points in the narrative. Frankly, if you're familiar with the basic plot and the core cast I don't think it's necessary to consume the canon to enjoy the fandom.

My read on the canon based only on the anime:

Endeavour was that abusive, but the narrative has chosen to redeem him through his future actions without retconning his past. Make of that what you will.

Bakugo has been redeemed by the narrative by becoming Izuku's friend and supporter (and, you know, was a young teenager when he was a bully so there is lot more leeway with redeeming him). He definitely needs therapy though. But basically the fics where he is mellower as an adult are consistent with his canon characterisation, if you assume he recognises his issues and works on them.

I have never understood the fandom's obsession with Dabi so I have no comment there. But also narratively he's still a psychopath so ???

Shigaraki is one of the most boring villains of all time and I refuse to read fic about him, lol.

Hawks is narratively a chill, cool competent guy who is also a great spy. And also canonically a simp for Endeavour in the same way Izuku is a simp for All Might, which is hilarious. Not actually a playboy in the narrative but the leap isn't that far tbh.

All Might isn't written as naive or sheepish as far as my reading? Just a victim of the circumstances created by the power vacuum of him giving up his powers, which he didn't really have a choice over. But there might be more plot I've not seen.

In conclusion: consuming more of the canon probably won't change your fandom reading habits, so don't worry too much about it.

Rather than naive, I'd say All Might is out of his depth. He's good at being a hero, but he's not sure how to shift away and be something else instead. (He did get himself a copy of a Teaching for Dummies book.)

You sound American. Not literally everyone with issues needs therapy. Quite a few people (and characters) can, in fact, work through them by themselves.

You can need therapy for just about anything. There's nothing too small that therapy can't help you with if you can afford therapy for such small things. But Americans are some of the least likely people to be able to afford therapy for such things, so your supposition that OP is American is kind of weird and out of left field. I mean, I guess if anything that's popular to say on the internet is "American"? "Needs therapy" is certainly very online. But not necessarily wrong.

Shigaraki had some potential but last time I checked (which admittedly has been quite a while) he's basically just a character-less marionette for the real big bad and... meh. Meeeh.

I was never interested in his 'my hero mom abandoned me and my dad was mean so now I want to kill all heroes' schtick, but then he became even more boring when he became All For One's puppet. He now seems to exist just to give Izuku a moral dilemma/ create narrative tension when Izuku faces off against the big bad. The rest of the LoV are much more interesting than him and I'm disappointed they just got subsumed into All For One's forces.

Shigaraki as a character I've read is a point when I know I've reached the bottom of the barrel for myself but there's plenty of Shigaraki love out there. His fanon personality has him as a mostly anti-social mean crusty shit, and depending on the fic, a nice dollop of misogyny a la incel gamer.

I won't speak for everyone, but I'm into the aesthetic, the voice, and he easily plays into the fantasy of sad/bad boy (without the RL dangers of messing around with someone who could do damage). I know part of what I personally really liked (and it's not limited to this fandom) it's the character that is batshit, but /you/, you are special and so you're spared their wrath or what have you. Some fics go into dealing with the abuse, and again, not something anyone would like IRL, but something that people can play with in fiction.

Thanks for the Dabi explanation, that makes sense. I've never been a bad boy or villain loving girl myself so I'm not good at picking who will become the fandom's darling at all. When I went into the Hawks tag I was soooo confused when there was so much Hawks/Dabi, lol.

If you want to go into the characters more, I check FS most days so I will definitely check back to read it!

Lol I've always been into the bad boy/villain (for the most part). I started with Hawks (my fave) for his design and the nonchalance and it turns out he's one who goes too far and that's how I ended up on Dabi AND Endeavour lol

I got into All Might via his fanon villain persona All Smite, but I really liked the idea of toying with how he feels in his deflated form vs former form and how that might affect the way he would enter and be in a relationship. There's an amazing All Smite fic that leans into this. So good lol.

Bakugo fics I started reading because of the summaries-- asshole A-type personality type of hero running his own agency, hard to work with etc. I feel like if I saw the show I would end up dropping the fics because I would start seeing him as the kid character, if that makes sense? I had no real context beforehand for him other than he used to be shitty, still kind of is, but working on it. If I had grown up watching it, I might feel differently (like Harry Potter-- I grew up reading it and still read fic for it). But he's a fun character to read sometimes!

As for my beloved Hawks, I'm curious as to what you meant by it's not a leap to see him as a playboy. Fanon really runs the gamut regarding his character. Have you read any Hawks fic? He's usually either very sweet or manipulative. There was a serious fic where he's healing from SPOILERS and dealing with the consequences of his actions and there's some soul searching etc. That one was really good. I also enjoy the ones where he's not 100% good and you question his motivations and what not. And of course, fics where he feels the need to nest and mate because birdquirk lol.

I could go on about Endeavour lol but I like him both on the road to redemption and not on that road at all. It really depends on my mood. But he's interesting to explore and in a sense explore the world building because of his desire to have a legacy/build the perfect quirk child.like why? Where does this impulse come from? How was he raised? What is the culture? And his perception of himself.

Again, when I need a break from the bad boys, I read All Might. He's just so good. And I want to cuddle him. Boney or buff lol

A bit late to this!

I have come across a few evil!All Might fics but didn't know they were an entire subgenre in and of themselves, interesting. I've also seen a whole lot of villain fics for Izuku. It's not my thing but I do quite like the villain interpretation for him. It's like, yeah, he's been through some shit, he could totally turn evil at anytime! (On that note there's a canon arc where Bakugo gets kidnapped by the League since they think he is the kid most likely to turn evil, and he is incredibly offended by that. It's played angstily but I think it is actually very funny in hindsight).

I am a basic bitch who loves BakuDeku so the Bakugo fics I've read are in that romantic context. But what I like about the best of those fics is that Bakugo has to go through a minimum amount of character growth and repentence for them to make sense as a couple, which is very much my jam in romance. But it's definitely a balancing act - he still needs to be a cocky asshole too, otherwise it feels OOC, and just isn't fun.

I can understand you not wanting to know his canon backstory for the reasons you've said though. I used to read a lot of HP fic and quite liked grown up Draco stuff - but sometimes I found it hard to get into those stories because I would be like 'wait a minute, he was actually a racist bully as a kid, does he really not have to deal any consequences for that?', which would take me out of an otherwise fun story.

But at the same time I do like seeing how people envision Bakugo using his strengths and weaknesses to become an actually functional hero (plus, he gets plenty of character growth in canon too).

I really like Hawks as a character and I've read a few Hawks/Endeavour fic (do I maybe have a good boy/bad boy thing? Maybe lol). I said I don't think it's a leap for him to be playboy because he is canonically charming - he is able to get the hero students to hero worship him a bit even though they're surrounded by powerful heroes, and he's also convince grumpy mean Endeavour to help him. And that's all while simultaneously being the youngest ever Number 2 Hero and also a deep undercover spy in the Paraliberation Army. Considering he grew up in poverty and was rescued as a child by the Commission and raised to be a hero, it's actually kind of nuts what he has achieved. So I say it's not a stretch for him to be a playboy because it is entirely consistent with his character to be able to charm anyone into doing what he wants - so why wouldn't that stretch to sleeping with him? Plus, you know, the whole playboy spy cliche.

Though I'm probably more into angsty depressed Hawks, lol.

I like Endeavour on the road to redemption myself, but I also like him because I see his worst vices as Bakugo's competitiveness and desire to be the best at all costs taken to its extreme. (On that note, I really like the parallels between the kid characters and the adult characters). I don't know if it comes up in fic as much, but in canon it's said his desire to build the perfect child is because if he can't, he wants one of his children to one day beat All Might and become the Number One Hero. Such a petty bitch. But onviously as you say there must be a bit more to it that isn't explained, because that is a completely nuts thing to do.

Good All Might is also my love. Fics where he and Izuko's mother get together in the background and she loves his boney broken self very much my jam.

Are you into Aizawa at all? He is probably my favourite adult in the series even though I don't read that much fic of him.

So I'm super tired and will gush later about the other comments, but I have read some Aizawa here & there! He's super chill and I like seeing him in a kind of accidental father role. I feel like a fair amount of the fic I've read about him has been OOC, though, so it can vary. But there's some decent fic for him as well. He's paired often with the loud speaker dude.

Full disclosure, I tend to read OC/MC pairings, but I don't mind when it's MC1xOCxMC2 and it's really just an OT3 where everyone is together.

Aizawa is such a fave. At first I thought he and Present Mic were a random pairing - but they actually have a backsliding together where they were best friends in school, which is wild.

OC/MC isn't usually my cup of tea, but I respect it. I also think it's great when a fandom is big enough that there is enough OC content for people who are into it. And I get some of the appeal - recently I've read some OC/MC longfic that I've really enjoyed.
