Why is Fandom Twitter So DUMB about shit?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-18 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
So I found this thread about this guy who supposedly got fired off the staff of Steven Universe for ..idk...inappropriate behavior and/or shipping himself with a canon lesbian character. From all the stuff people showed of him and things he's done/said that were legit issues and creepy stuff he's done to real people I had to believe it was more than that.

So while everyone's talking about ACTUAL stupid shit and bad shit this guy has done and his homophobia (how does someone this homophobic be on the staff of SU in the first place? dayum) one person comments something about being an OC maker/selfshipper but "I can't excuse selfshipping with a canon character"

..THAT'S the issue you have?? I what?

Here's a thread of this guy pissing off other creators , talking shit (he has a weird ass hateboner for Dana Terrace) and even creeping on a minor, and this person is like "he shipped himself/his selfinsert with a canon character? UNACCEPTABLE".

Are people really still stupidly offended about shit like this in 2023?

Yup. It's alllll fine until it offends them personally.

I think that the person in question is genuinely squicked.

They might have thought it better to label a minor flaw of this guy instead of chewing him out non stop.

maybe but idk it just seems in context of the thread so weird to be squicked about that one bit.

Personally my issue was that he shipped himself with a character (pearl) who was very obviously a lesbian and judging by his other stuff he seems to be lesbophobic and it has very homophobic undertones. But idk I guess. I have seen someone in the past who claimed to be especially bothered by OC/canon in any context to the point of getting physically disgusted by it

But it just seems WERID to me I guess????

nayrt but I can only hope they're making a joke, since it's pretty obvious that the IRL stuff is unquestionably worse than the shipping by comparison.

Shipping himself with Pearl wasn't one of the reasons he was fired, was it? I heard about him a long time ago because of people having issues with him for that. Nothing else was brought up then, the staff didn't seem to care, and he hadn't been fired yet, so I'm going to assume the self-shipping was just some old news someone dragged up when the actually bad stuff he did got him fired and now Twitter's convinced it's part of the reason.

While Fandom Twitter is dumb, this also is a pretty standard level of dumb for SU fandom on any platform. Nothing against the show, but as a collective the fans are performatively dramatic about the kind of stuff that goes in an offended teenager’s tumblr dni.
