What's your favorite spelling error?

(Anonymous) 2023-05-19 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Defiantly instead of definitely makes me laugh every time. Just the way it changes the context of the sentence is always funny to me.

Judgement, the British spelling of judgment (US spelling). I have to remind myself all the time because as a lawyer it does come up a lot. And judgement just looks better.

It's not a word I use super often, but whenever I do, it always takes me a couple seconds to remember if there's an E or not. I also think it looks better with the E!

Fir

Usually happens when I'm typing/trying to type "for". I then read it with an accent. Lol.

Defiantly always amuses me, too!

I recently friended someone on social media (a friend of a friend, who I have only met once) who I have learned thinks that "spelling rules" are offensive and has decided that she is only going to spell things the way she thinks they "should" be spelled (including her husband's name, which he is apparently okay with because she's ~quirky~). An example of one of her posts would be something like:

"Donnyld [her husband, whose name is actually spelled Donald] izs pickeeng ahp sbagettey ahn hihz weiye hohm frumme wyrke. Caunt waite tou sie hym!"

(For the record, she was born and raised in the US and her first language is English. According to my friend that knows her, she used to spell things correctly until a couple years ago when she for some reason decided that she is being oppressed by dictionaries or something and she shouldn't have to anymore. She's completely insane but occasionally entertaining lol.)

Oh wow, that sounds like... AN EFFORT.

This weirdly flashed me back to my days on MSN messenger as a teen where some of my friends would have this ~quirky, ~cutesy way of speaking, like lots of "animu" type phrases (nyaa/mou/desuuu) and it always looked like such an effort. Like such a consistent, constant thing, like you couldn't just go "I had a bit of a shit day," it had to be run through a personality filter first and it looked exhausting.

Am dying at "sbagettey," though. That's going on our next shopping list.

AYRT

Seriously! It sounds exhausting to have to keep up with!

Also, I'm cracking up that you mentioned MSN messenger because I literally almost made a joke about her being a time-traveling teenager from 2005 on AOL messenger because she totally reminds me of kids I knew as a teenager who did stuff like that. She's in her 30s, though. My friend said she does this because otherwise she wouldn't have a personality, which might be mean but possibly true lol.

Her food-related spellings are the most amusing to me. Wottermellan, peatsah, kache, and ztrawbearease are the craziest ones I've seen.

Oh I hate her already, I cannot imagine following her on any text-based platform where I would have to see her... spelling.

Definitely prostate/prostrate. Either being substituted for the other is great.

Ha, yes! I've worked in the medical field for years and have seen the word "prostate" probably more than the average person, and the amount of people who spell it as "prostrate" is actually surprising to me. I'm not sure I've ever seen it the other way around, but that would be pretty funny.

When you get autocorrected to duck or ducking.

Though once I was typing about a dream I had where I took a trip in a "spaceshit." In my defense, I had just woken up and was still groggy.

I will never let my friend live down the time she announced "I'm a petty duck" to me. We both laughed for almost five minutes over that particular autocorrect.

I have to type the word "county" a lot for work and often my fingers miss the "o"...

When someone grabs someone by the waste, it tends to make me snort.

Sometimes it frustrates me, but sometimes it amuses me when some uses access for assess, just depends on how it has been used.

When someone uses butt for butte or but, it's always funny.

I almost always find it exasperating when phase is used when they mean faze, however I almost always find the reverse funny - "He's going through a faze.", "Her job is being fazed out."

Saw bizarre used for bazaar and that gave me an interesting mental image.

I’m a polyglot.

I love multiple keyboards on my iPad.

Autocorrect can kiss my heaby meatal...

I mean autocorrect can kiss my next inadvertent album name or something...

Owchie.

"Pedalstool" instead of "pedestal." I always thought it was just a funny bit from The IT Crowd and not a common mistake. Then one of my managers at my last job used it twice in a very serious report for a very serious grievance meeting.

I giggled then and haven't stopped giggling since.

This is less of a spelling thing and more of a grammatical thing, but I've noticed a huge uptick in the amount of people using "itch" instead of "scratch" in my part of the world and I don't know how it started. Like "I'm itching my arm." No, you have an itch, and you're scratching it. You don't itch an itch.

Pervious for previous. I can't decide if this is funnier on FetLife or in non-sexual contexts.
